able to remain open the provin cial government decides to in troduce legislation restricting Sunday openings Contacted Thursday Acton Chairman Dan said a letter is currently in the works to be sent to North MPP Noel stating the vitali ty of Acton downtown area would be negatively affected if Sunday shopping was curtailed This letter is a followup to one Acton Councillor Rick Bonnette sent to Mr and the pro vince s Ministry of Tourism earlier this year stressing that TO per cent of Acton downtown businesses representing approx imately 300 employees depends on Sunday shopping being allow ed These businesses include Flight Line West Warehouse and Forever Christmas said the councillor said Thursday he believes the majority of On tarians favor wideopen Sunday shopping with which he has no problem But if the vnce comes out against Sunday shopping it should at least in cluce in the legislation an exemp- for tourist oriented in Acton said the councillor BUI Chard an assistant to Mr said the New Democratic Party government is working on what is referred to as common pause day legislation If passed stores would be re quired to close their doors on either Saturdays or Sundays depending on the store owners religion he said Mr Chard couldn say if the government has yet considered including ex empUons in the legislation Since last fall the furor sur rounding the Sunday shopping issue has been nonexistent At that time the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the existing provin cial Sunday shopping legislation to be unconstitutional leaving the doors wideopen for any business to open Sundays Before the Supreme Court s ruling the Old Hide House Flight Line Leathertown West Warehouse and Bronte Village were the Halton businesses permitted to open Sundays under the previous Liberal government legislation because they were recognized as touristoriented businesses Under that legislation Region granted these stores a tourist exemption because they met the following criteria the majonty of their sales came from tourists they did extensive advertising outside their mediate area and the stores nad either historical environmental geographic or cultural signfficance Regional Tourism Promotion Coordinator Pam Banks said from a tourism perspective Sun day shopping has positive results for businesses such as the Old Hide House The Old Hide House ability to attract shop pers from other areas outside Halton Hills on Sundays not only benefits that store it also means more customers for businesses in the surrounding area explamed Mr Banks She t comment on the position Halton
