solid waste in in the province should stop Haltons attempts to identify possible incineration sites irr the Region predicts North Halton MPP Noel It would make the most economic sense he said for the Region to discontinue attempts at locating possible sites for an energy from waste incineration site is studying possible locations throughout Halton four of which are located in the southern part of Hills Mr said he opposes incineration as a means of ing garbage because the existing incineration technology has yet to show all toxic gases resulting from the process can be prevented from entenng the at mosphere Ms Oner said during her an nouncement that incineration is inconsistent with reduction reuse and because it relies on a steady large quantity of mixed waste It is a superficial solution which does not attack the root of the problem we must wasteless Halton Director of Waste Management John Mackay said Monday he would have to review the announcement more thoroughly before offering authoritative comments He did suggest the announce ment will have no effect on in the short run but may the long run Under the previous Liberal government Halton was ordered to investigate the possibility of establishing an incineration plant before receiving approval for the Regional landfill site in Milton The plant was to be established by the year said Mr Mackay He explained however the Regions recycling programs are proving to be more successful than originally thought That means if 50 per cent of the garbage now being produced in can be diverted from- a landfill site through recycling in the next eight years Halton wont need an incineration facility be said Under this scenario the Region would have no problem abiding by the provinces bad on Incinera tion If falls to divert per cent of the Regions waste stream by the year 2000 through recycling then Mr doesnt know what will do given Ms Grlers announcement Rita Landry spokesperson for local environmental group In
