week ago while wat ching TV Im serious No it wasnt while watching Oral Roberts or Pat Robertson It certainly wasnt Robert Schuller or Kenneth It was Stanley Kubrick or rather a film directed by him in Paths of Glory A RELIGIOUS FILM Paths of Glory isnt about God although HeShe is mentioned from time to time nor is it about priests although there is a priest in the film nor is it about nuns or missionaries or bornagain rock musicians Its about French soldiers dur ing men who live under the extraordinary stresses of military discipline during war time Our soldiers members of the 701 Regiment are under the care of Colonel played by Kirk Douglas Hes the good guy Theyre also in the incompetent hands of General Hes the bad guy Anyway General Macready sends the 701 out on an impossible mission to attack the German lines The men are cut to rib bons and retreat back to their lines The General is and has three men chosen from the to be courtmartialed and ex ecuted by firing squad Kirk Douglas defends the three men and learns a lesson about military life its corrupt and political The General wants to save face by putting the blame on his cowardly troops Douglas learns that during the battle the General had ordered his artillery to fire on his own trenches to punish his retreating troops He presents this informa tion to the Chief of Staff hoping that the lives of his three men will be saved It doesnt work They are shot But that same day the Chief of Staff fires and offers the job to Douglas thinking that Douglas motivation all along was to advance his career Douglas storms out refusing the offer the lessons we all learn in life right Now comes the religious part Its the last scene in the film It occurs in a bar on the basse The bar is full of soldiers of the who are drinking and singing during their brief furlough The bartender tells them he has a special treat for them He br- out a young German woman captured by the French army She is an attractive woman who is antiwar film right But its also a film about any group or organization that loses sight of the value and integrity of its members Its a film about the possibility of creating human communities that
