THE WEEKEND OUTLOOK Friday May 17 1991 Page 11 Peoples Forum Residents demanding answers Editor Note The following let ter was released to the Hills Herald for publication Mr Shettel Halton Hills Drive Georgetown L7G4T1 Dear Mr Shettel Enclosed you will find a copy of a petition sent to Canada Homes situated on 116 Viceroy Dr Con cord The people of this subdivision are fed up with the delays and ex cuses We question why we are paying such high taxes We are paying taxes for a subdivision that would be complete yet it is incomplete Taxes are not in your jurisdiction I know but building inspection is Could you answer on behalf of the people in this subdivision known as The Villages of Georgetown Why would a house pass in when there is no ground wires Why would a house pass in when there is no cold air returns 3 Why would a house pass in when the heat vents are nothing but decorations and have no function Why would a house pass in spection when the fireplace serves better as an open window Why is it allowed that a builder gives you a different set of blue prints and leads the buyer down the garden path i our contract states casement win are to be installed throughout except for the base ment window which are to be sliders Cheap sliding windows are installed on all levels in the back of the houses We were not told of this we found out upon moving day Would you not consider this misleading Last but certainly not least why would a house pass inspec tion when there are live wires ex posed on the property Some children were playing with these wires and started a fire They are very lucky they were not to death Is it any wonder that we would question you on the above We hope that these mistakes are not made again especially the latter We would your operation as mentioned in our letter we are fed up living in this dangerous dump site The past year for some of us certainly has not been a pleasant and we will not tolerate this any longer We have not been treated fairly its time everyone involv ed pulls up their boot straps We would appreciate your co operation in seeing that this sub division is cleaned up safe for the children and that the area is finally completed Grass was to be lad when weather permits ac cording to their contract WSeather permitted only on the model homes last I would say they are in violation of their contract wouldn t you We hope to get these wheels moving this season and we hope that you can be of some help to us With thanks I speak on behalf of the homeowners of Canada Homes Villages of Georgetown Sincerely Carol Ann Georgetown Reformed federalism needed Dear Sir According to an article in the Kitchener Waterloo Record the prime minister turns down a broad assembly on the and plans on setting up another parliamentary commit tee by summer to hammer out a constitutional reform proposal and is not inclined to expand it beyond MPs and senators It would therefore exclude representatives of the provinces special interest groups and abonginees He states I m of the view that if you are elected you acquired the responsibility to fulfill your obligations until the next elec tion I fail to see where people who are not elected somehow in the minds of some acquire greater legitimacy than others should remember he only became prime minister per cent of the vote due to our imperfect electoral system with his popularity rating now plum meting to 14 per cent We need reformed federalism in Canada but this must be dead ed by intelligent and honest peo ple with the interests of our coun try at heart representatives of each political party from each pre vtncial government and aboriginal people We cannot trust the future of our country to this prime minister and his Tory representatives Another prime ministerial Sending his over night guest Margaret Thatcher who was on a private speaking tour the United States with her party back to London on a free flight by Challenger jet at a cost of to Canadian taxpayers Has the Iron Lady become so rus ty she could not afford to pay her own way home Yours truly Garland Anne Ott Ontario Rotary Club thanks supporters Dear Sir Through the months of March and April members of the Rotary Club of Georgetown have been working to encourage support for the 1991 Easter Seal Campaign We are pleased to announce that our target of has been achieved and as normal some donations are still to come in 00 This is outstanding and made possible by the support of con individuals and business in Georgetown Balhnafad with the backing of our two local newspapers and TV station to spread the message of Easter Seals Helping physically disabled children to progress in life is a goal to which the Easter Seal Society has been committed since its inception in 1922 Our club is proud to be associated with this work which helps over youngsters around Ontario We extend our thanks to all those who showed they cared about the futures of these children by backing them Berrys World Do you believe there will be a recession through Easter Seals their con will really make a ference The Society s nurse has on her list and calls on 12 children our At the time of writing dona are still being received Yours sincerely Bud Bishop Easter Seal Campaign Chairman Rotary Club of Georgetown Agrees with Gori Dear Editor Re letters in People s Forum on May would like to say that for once I can endorse Guiseppe s remarks At last he has found another subject which has to be of interest to any thinking person the Ont gov t does not have its fair share of thinkers Then I read Garth s plea for support from the taxpayers tion Can this be the same Garth who for months now had been telling us that the GST would be revenue neutral and was the best thing for us since sliced bread seem possible Can this be the same Garth who s gov t has just put themselves above the law that is passed last week Bill takes away the right of the police to investigate an MP Not content with taking away property rights on which all law is based they now put themselves in the position of be ing untouchable Great for our MPs bad for us It about time the rascals were thrown out Libertarian Party Acton Ontario Hats off to Rob Mr Robert Risk Sports Editor The Halton Hills Herald Dear Robert Late in the month of October of last year I came to you on behalf of the volunteer steenng commit tee of the Industrial Curling League and outlined how and why we needed the cooperation of the Halton Hills Herald Throughout the curling season you never let us down and for that we thank you immensely It is difficult to change public opinion when opinion is set even when it is inaccurate but with your continuing support we hope to do that insofar as curling is concerned in this community Your coverage of our activities has helped in revitalizing interest and enthusiasm in what we hope hundreds of citizens ot our com munity will come to realize over time is a truly marvellous Cana recreational activity You have shared in communicating that curling is a dynamic com of gamesmanship strategy technique teamwork respect and most importantly comradery And you have shared m communicating that there is nothing better than curlfng as a recreational activity at which to have fun and to develop mean ingful and lasting social relation ships Next season it is our hope and expectation that there will be 32 teams in the Industrial Curling League We hope that you be supportive of us again Sincerely James A Henderson Georgetown No problems with phones Dear Editor We too were pleased by the Talk to Turner program we produced last week on Halton Community Television I hasten to add however that contrary to appearances there were no technical difficulties with the telephones There is a two step process two buttons in in getting the caller s voice on the air Once the pro gram was interrupted and the process explained for a second time everythingwent smoothly The process has worked well over the years for all our call in programmes Much credit is due to S our Pro gram Coordinator for getting things back on track again Mind vou the essence of Com Television is that it is not as slick as broadcast television Nor should it be considering that the studio is manned largely by volunteer hobbyists and allows enthusiastic amateurs access to the airwaves In our 23 years Cable has always supported political pro gramming as essential informa tion for our viewers and we look forward to working again with Garth Turner when he uses local television to reach his We thank you too for your sup port Yours truly Ollivier Marketing Manager CableSystems Use common sense NDP is urged Dear Sir I was present at Queen s Park during a demonstration by POWER a group fighting a private proposal for a garbage dump in a quarry in the middle of Niagara Escarpment lands in Hills The quarry owners have ap parently violated several Acts in the past did not follow the ap proved rehabilitation plans and possibly do not hold valid licences The Town the Region and the Ministry of the Environ are all against the proposal as Halton already has an site However no one seems to be able to stop the bureaucracy which will the matter in front of an Environmental Assessment board costing tax payers millions of dollars What an opportunity for the government to show that they can save taxpayers money and at the same time save Hills environment and water supply by using some sense Sincerely Giuseppe Gon Deputv Leader Family Coalition Party of Ontario Road signs wanted To The Editor Some arguments for more road sums in Georgetown If you have ever travelled in the USA you may have marvelled as I have at the abundance of signs It is the variety of size color and content that makes them amusing They also serve to keep the mind of the drivers more alert and in this way I m sure they help minimize traffic accidents One of my favorite Canadian cities is London Ontario I love to drive down Wellington St through all those lovely signs every one is distinctly calling my attention to its resting place with every type of color light and message that is imaginable You don t have to wonder if there are any businesses with anything to offer it s kind of like mall shopp ing from your car I am opposed to any by law that would encourage uniformity in size color content or placement of our signs I would encourage others to keep signs in good shape so as not become an eyesore like an abandoned car Mark Poulls Georgetown Ontario Write us a letter The Herald wants to hear
