Ontario Herald photo Town housing needs discussed The Herald Although single family homes will continue to be the dominant type of housing m Hills during the next years there will also be an increase in medium and high density housing during this time That s the message local residents who attended heard Wednesday during a public in formation meeting on the Towns future housing needs held at the Civic Centre The average income per household in Halton Hills is above the Ontario average income per household but a significant number of the Town s population is classified as low income said Susan the Town s housing consultant The existence of low families means the Town in ac cordance with the province s housing policy must provide a variety of housing types Ms MacPherson said According to the provinces housing policy municipalities must provide housing in order that all residents have a place to live Aside from single family homes other types of housing that should be considered for the Town include townhouses semi detached houses apartments situated above commercial establishments and apartment buildings The end result will necessitate intensifications of the Georgetown and Acton urban areas said Ms There has been very little in falsification in Halton Hills to date she said Georgetown resident Ernest Ball said intensification stnkes fear in the minds of many living in the community People came to Georgetown to get away from intensifica he said He said a big reason housing affordable is because of the high cost of land pnces Land pnces are too high because of speculation land flipping ac cording to Mr Bali Ed Starr Region s housing consultant who also at tended Wednesday s meeting countered Mr Ball by saying his statements are based on a nar row way of thinking Mr Starr explained land costs are too high for affordable housing when single family homes are the only accepted type of housing However the greater number of units located on a piece of proper ly the cheaper the land cost per unit of housing You can hove it both ways affordable housing and no said Mr Starr Both the consultants and those in attendance appeared to agree there is no point talking about building more housing in Hills unless the Town s industrial base starts to grow However the two groups disagreed which should come first the housing or industry Most of those residents who at tended the meeting seemed to agree new industry must be established in Town before new types of housing are considered The consultants said the op posite They argued businesses would locate in Halton Hills if they knew there was affordable housing so their employees could live in Town Local builder David McNally agreed with the consultants He said his company Con struction owns industrial lands in Town and one of the questions prospective buyers ask is what type of housing is located in the community One of the reasons more in dustry doesn t locate in Halton Hills said Mr McNally is because the housing is too expen sive for their employees Those who want to have input on the Town housing strategy can pick up comment sheets at the Town Planning Department located in the Hills Civic Centre The strategy itself will be presented to Town Council July 15 for consideration FCP meet The Family Coalition Party North Executive will be holding its annual meeting this Wednesday
