Bin Smith Golf Tournament was worth the ride A piece of advice for anyone who goes golfing with Bill Smith don let him drive the golf cart I went out with him to take some pictures during his golf tourna ment at the North Golf and Country Club last week and was given quite a ride I don t mind going fast but the steepness of some of the hills he chose to go down was a little unsettling Why go around or back up when you can go over the theory I just glad I have my clubs on the back because they would have been strewn all over the first nine holes If his golf cart skills are any in dication of how he drives it no wonder he got into the auto parts business he saves a bundle on repairs Just kidding Bill I had a great time at the tournament and it looked like everyone else did too Looking forward to next years already III drive though Got a copy of a letter sent by Jean president of the Georgetown Baseball Associa tion to Tom ShepanJ director of Recreation and Parks for the Town of Hills It was nice ly worded but it main thrust was clear maintenance of the diamonds is terrible The letter lists the following The grass at Stewarttown Diamond has been allowed to grow so high that baseballs have gotten lost in it I lost one or two of those little golf balls on the Risky Business by Robert Risk ft fairways but losing a baseball says something about the town s techniques 2 Centennial and Joseph Gib bons diamonds are unplayable for days after a hard rain because the fields draining properly In addition to this the mam diamond where the rep teams and older aged house poorly Not only that the coaches have to drain it themselves in order to make the infield playable When I asked if that wasn t the Recrea and Parks job I got funny looks and was told town staff is rarely if ever seen on the fields after wet weather If the coaches didn t do it the diamond wouldn befit to play on The poor condition of the main diamond is a very bad way to advertise the town to visitors especially since it is the most us by the competitive leagues I wonder what they think when they know that after a rainy period a visit to Georgetown means playing in the mud also questioned the ability to schedule more games on the weekend due to a lack of new fields the last new one was built 10 years ago and a growing membership With special events such as the Highland Games and BangO Rama said it is impossible to work something out Finally I quote Aubin directly Almost 10 per cent of the GBA s annual budget goes to the Town of Hills for use of diamonds and lights Right now the G B A does not feel that it is getting it s moneys worth Oh how true Sadly this doesn t come as a sur prise to many of the other groups who use the local fields such as Georgetown District High School students flag football the soccer clubs etc etc Synchronized swimming Balance concentration and a little help from a friend were all part of this year opening of the Dik Licata Memor al Pool located
