the challenge Eye of the tiger By BETSY CORNWELL Herald Special The old adage about tigers not being able to change their stripes certainly has held true for Georgetown resident Keith Rieger Over 10 years ago Keith was a schoolboy track and field cham pton in Grads 6 and but the run bug went dormant for a lengthy period and didn t flare up again until recently The intervening years saw Rieger keeping in shape with a variety of pursuits such as hockey motocross windsurfing and mountain biking In the fall of he took up running again for run and entered the Toronto Marathon where he placed well with the en tirely respectable time of 2 hours and minutes Some friends who were on athletic scholarships south of the border urged Keith to get serious about his running and go after his own athletic scholarship at an American university Since graduating from high school Keith has completed the Sheridan Business Program through part time enrollment while being selfemployed I realized a university education would open more doors for me in the business world I am grateful to further my academic background whilst doing the same for my running career he said Rieger started training with Brian Barnes a former National Coach in October of last year and almost immediately started com in and winning American road races In October of he won the Holden Beach North Carolina race setting a new course record Over the winter some muscle problems surfaced from the intense training but a two month layoff and minor surgery in February corrected the pro blem He won his first race following the lay off in March of set ting another course record in the Buffalo Equinox run goal of obtaining an American athletic scholarship was ambitious for a complete unknown who had not progressed through the usual US high school competition and never been scouted He realized he needed a higher profile to attract attention so he decided to enter the world largest race in Carlsbad California in April
