University of New Mexico at Albuquerque most impressed Rieger It has a beautiful cam pus setting at 5000 feet above sea level surrounded by mountains and the track program is very strong I think I will be able to reach my potential there Under the complicated regula tions governing US College athletic competition Rieger is currently eligible for 3 years of running with the university His scholarship amounts to per cent of his costs with the possibili ty of rising to per cent depen ding on his performance His academic program will consist of a major in Business with a minor in the Physical Sciences He must maintain a 20 average to retain his scholarship and he will average hours of course work per week plus 34 hours of train ing every day leaves for New Mexico on August 19th and his classes start on the 26th He expects to be in competition almost im mediately with the University track team in the Western Athletic Conference and hopes to be part of New Mexicos deter mined effort to unseat the peren nial champions Brigham Young Keith will concentrate on the 3000m distance for indoor events and 5000m outdoors and when asked what his longer term goals might be his eyes light up at the barest hint of running for Canada in international events At age might seem a little old to be embarking on a high level running career but in the distances he runs the com petitors tend to peak in their late twenties Keith is obviously excited about this sudden revival of an almost forgotten skill and the op portunities opening up Without the support of my family and friends I probably wouldnt have tried this I also want to thank my coach at Centennial Jim Rail be told me a long time ago that If I worked at it I could be a good run ner well Im finally working at it
