Mr Krause He made the comments in response to questions about a letter Domi Seed House president Charles MacLean recently sent to the Town of Halton Hills In the letter Mr Dominion Seed House is actively pursuing its goal of developing its acres in the of Georgetown It the proper ty represents the opportunity to give Georgetown a vital core of commercial residential and public uses Calling the letter an in termediate step in the company s development plans Mr Krause said it was sent to Mayor Russ Miller and Town Council to let them know the company wants the land to be recognized by the Town for its potential as lands According to the letter the company is getting ready to come forward with a master plan con for the site Mr Krause said the company is contemplating several types of development both residential and commercial The proposal for developing the property is dif ficult he said because it is so large Whatever development is decided upon it will be done in a step approach so one project can fund another and so on ex Krause In the letter Mr wntes we must attract commer cial interests to the site in order to generate funds to carry out the master plan We urge you the Town to keep this in mind when considering other designations area development proposals The Dominion Seed House development plan doesnt come as a surprise The company first announced in April 1989 it had plans to develop the lands into a commercial and residential area Since that time company representatives have been meeting with planners economists business interests and surrounding neighbors to discuss how development should proceed According to Mr MacLeans letter the lands will be developed in a way that avoids the strip development syndrome that afflicts many of our neighboring communities Contacted Friday Town Plann Director Ian Keith said he is aware Dominion Seed House has plans to develop its lands but his department has not yet received a formal application The Dominion Seed House lands could present an ty for commercial and residential development but the current Hills Urban Study Review will decide for certain said Mr Keith The Urban Study Review cur Hills schools A school in Georgetown and a school in Acton as well as four other schools throughout Halton Region could have an innovative program in place to help children with emotional problems by this September A group of educators and Social Service workers operating under the name Bet ter Bridges have applied to the provincial government for ap proximately to establish a school based Mental Health project for latencyage children who display behavioral problems the classroom Better Bridges member and District Health Council Executive Director Marlene Longdon said Monday the pro vince mil decide by September if the group will receive the necessary funding The project aims to help children aged 11 12 who have problems If the pro blems arent addressed at this time they could develop into medium or severe mental disorders during the childs teen years explained Ms If the funding becomes available the six Halton Region schools will be chosen to imple ment the project The hope is to have the program in Georgetown Acton and the Regions other municipalities she said Each school will be responsible for developing a project team comprised of parents teachers and a mental health worker to devise programs which will ad dress the children needs In this sense the programs developed in each school will be unique to the particular problems of the students in each school said Ms She explained some of the students have pro blems as a result of a learning disability while others have pro blems focusing their attention during class time because of a disruptive family life According to Ms Longdon parents and teachers are noticing an increase in the numbers students who display aggressive and disruptive behavior in the classroom Through the Better Bridges program Ms is hopeful children with behavional pro blems can stay in the classroom instead of having to be treated in a special facility Currently children identified with behavonal problems who cant be brought under control are put in a special class where in some cases the children will receive treatment said Ms Ms said the cial funding if forthcoming will permit the program to run for months At that time it will be re quired to obtain funds from other sources if the program is to con tinue In 18 months the costs will be a lot less predicted Ms Longdon because most of the required start up resources will
