violence women and children Family Violence whether physical sexual verbal psychological or economic even tually effects every member of the family Whether the assault is direct or indirect the result Is the same Victims must have com munity help not only for support when they recognize their need but also to help them identify the abuse to which they are being subjected By B PALMER Herald Special Family violence affects every resident in community It is no longer a private personal mat ter to remain hidden in the home The community has a right and a responsibility to become involv ed Facts substantiate the effect violence is having on our educa tional health and social services systems This costs every member of society a great deal financially but most important- ly our future generations will be negatively impacted by the violence being directed against them Violence must riot be tolerated or excused Family violence can be eliminated through awareness acknowledgement and involvement Families suf- from violence need com munity help understanding and support Members of this community need to become more aware of the symptoms of abuse to be able to identify children and women who may be in abusive situations That is the only way to break this ugly cycle Because abusive behavior is a learned behavior abuse can be stopped A victim who is being abused by her male partner owes it to herself and her children to seek help otherwise her children will become victims or abusers Boys learn to physically abuse women from their fathers who were poor role models while girls learn to be submissive and to ac cept aggressive behavior from their parents who were poor role models Psychological warfare can be devastating as can verbal assaults Most abusers have learned how to abuse from being abused by someone in their life Members of the community belonging to nonviolent healthy families owe it to society to become involved and encourage those less fortunate to modify their behavior patterns The cycle of violence is perpetuated because children of abuse grow up recognizing abusive relationships as being the norm Often women feel they can better help the abuser by staying in the abusive relation ship Because of the financial fami ly and other stresses placed on the home it is easy to treat the symptoms of abuse rather than recognizing and considering the root problem in the relationship Symptoms masking the problem include depression anxiety suicidal thoughts guilt shame a feeling of hopelessness or chronic ailments While some abusers are women studies reveal that ap proximately 93 per cent of ail HELP US HELP OURSELVES This broadbased column will direct articles to the plight of all abused families Issues surroun ding the characteristics of the abuser the characteristics of an abused woman the services available in the community and the effects of abuse on children and other family members will be considered Periodically abus ed women may contribute ar ticles and share their ex periences Case studies and fic tional accounts will be utilized to document abuse Although there are stereotypes the community needs to recognize that abuse spans all economic and cultural backgrounds and that the typical abuser is probably one of your neighbors To those who do not understand why any individual condones abuse remains in an abusive on the part of victims to pursue justice through the court system Student to visit UN Georgetown District High School student Richard Cook will be doing some significant sightseeing when he visits New York and the United Nations Sixteenyearold Richard will travel to New York and the United Nations from July on a trip sponsored by the Verdun Lodge no of Georgetown Jean King Secretary for the Lodge approached Georgetown District High School teacher Jim of the Social Science Department with the idea earlier this year This was the first time in 20 years that the Lodge has sponsored a student for the trip Students interested in the trip were asked to take a quiz on the United Nations- made up by Mr Broughton Richard received the highest score Adam Poyntz who placed second on the test will go to New York if Richard gets sick or is unable to make the trip Richard will begin his trip with a sendoff breakfast on July 16 when 20 other students from western Ontario will meet in Georgetown The
