organization As of April this year the NHPLA branch of the ProLife Association broke away from the Halton Association to form their own organization Georgetown resident Irene Menken whos on the board of directors for the NHPLA said with 600 active members the organization has the numbers to form a solid organization As well she said as part of the Halton Association members were having too far to travel when meetings were held in Burl ington The mandate of the organiza tion is to educate the genera public on all the prolife issues Basically we believe the baby is a person from the moment its conceived said Ms Menken We as a prolife movement are Christians from all denomina tions who feel abortion is wrong and want to educate the public about that Presently the group does presentations for any school church and men or ladies groups who ask In the presentation they talk about the unborn baby follow its growth from conception to birth and discuss alternatives to abortion for unwanted pregnancies she said A valuable service they offer is a referral service We have all the numbers of different organizations available to help women who decide to keep their babies services that offer both emotional and financial sup port said Ms Menken The also to support Birthright in Milton an organization that provides sup port to individual pregnant women The next plan intends to undertake is securing an office in the Georgetown area where pregnant young women could go to talk and people could call for information or to book a presen tation Ms Menken estimates it will take at least a year before an of fice is set up We have to get set up financially first she said The board is chaired by Grace Steenhof of Milton and board members are Gori Tony Smyth Mark and Mike Kennedy Anyone interested in con tacting the NHPLA can call or write to the North Halton Association Box 23011 Milton Ontario Georgetown man charged A Halton Hills man pleaded guilty to assault and assault caus ing Milton District Hospital where she was admitted suffering from multi- ple facial internal injuries and severe bruising Developers protest proposed charge Continued Page 1 Coun Marilyn Serjeantson also showed concern for charging a commercial and industrial development fee for the same reason In the end council decided to wait for the results of the ongoing public scrutiny of CN Watsons recommendations The public has until August 23 to submit comments on the development charge recommen dations The consultant also recom mended builders be charged a total of for Town and hydro related servicing accompanying construction of a new house Builders and developers are cur rently charged 5000 for a single family home The increased figure like the proposed industrial and commer cial charge ensures servicing for new developments is charged to the developer and not to the ex isting taxpayer Local developer and Halton Hills construction vicepresident Pilutti urged council to at least reject the commercial and in dustrial proposed development charge He argued there has been no in dustrial growth in Town for several years and the current recession means the proposed charge is unfair and logically flawed Mr suggested when the economy comes out of the reces sion in two or three years he predicted then council could reconsider imposing a develop ment charge on industrial and commercial development Hills Chamber of Com merce General Manager Doug asked the consultant a series of questions focusing on the data used to arrive at the con clusions the implication being the data may be inaccurate or misguided As requested Ms Kilgour said she would respond to the ques tions id writing as quickly as possible It will be tough to attract new growth with the development charges when there has been no growth without them he said Kent McCure representing the Halton Hills Construction Association questioned the con sultant on the decision not to dif ferentiate between types of com mercial and industrial develop ment at arriving at the recom mended development charges Since different types of in dustrial development use Town and hydro services to various degrees it makes sense the charges for commercial and in dustrial development should vary accordingly said Mr McClure Ms Kilgour said the industrial and commercial charge is an average based on various types of development It would have been too difficult to recommend a charge for every type of and industrial development she said Council will again consider the proposed development charge Sept Grain prices
