get a new arena until or later but Hills Council has already taken initial steps towards securing the needed land by as early as next year During an incamera session Monday during which the public and press are banned Council passed a resolution calling on staff to contlnuedjscussions with Acton East possibly obtain some of their East north of Highway 7 The Acton East developers are comprised of Coscan Develop ment Corporation Holdings and Limited all of Toronto Contacted Tuesday Town Mayor Miller said the ma jority of Councillors at Mondays meeting agreed the Acton East properties north of Highway 7 would be the best location for a new arena Over the past few months Mayor Miller has been meeting with developers owning land in Acton East in an attempt to secure land for an arena location Aside from looking at Acton East he also looked at the Canada Packers property and some in dustriallands on Wallace Street north of Highway 25 The Acton East lands north of Highway 7 are the best situated for an arena said Mayor Miller because they are easily accessi ble from Highway and once residential development occurs in the area the arena will be ser vicing a lot of young families he Acton Councillors Norm Elliott Gerald and Rick Bonnette share thusiasm for the Towtrobtaining land in Acton East north of Highway The lands in the area are flat and near the highway giving them a high profile said Coun Elliott You dont want a location that is out of sight out of mind he said The councillor continued by saying he is optimistic a deal can be worked out between the Town and the developers Im optimistic because the developers have been part of the negotiations from the start he said Coun Bonnette and Coun nie both provided similar statements in support of an Acton East location being settled on Coun said the current site is inadequate for a new arena There are soil problems and parking constraints he ex plained Contacted Tuesday John Koke spokesperson for Acton East development group said he too is optimistic a deal can be worked out hopefully by the end of the year He said the financial agree ment will probably be similar to the one Coscan Development an Acton East developer and the Town settled on for the purchase of property to build a new Acton fire hall Fire Chief BilE Cunningham said the land for- thnew fire hall was purchased foV lower than market corporations workers across the country are now on strike alert according to Darrell Moore President of the areas Canadian Union of Postal Workers CUPW local Strike alert means CUPWs locals across Canada have prepared their picket rosters chosen their picket captains and established their picket lines he said during an interview Tues day All that is left is the call from National President Jean Claude Parrot said Mr Moore After almost two years of negotiations between manage ment and the union talks are at a stalemate said Mr Moore unions last contract expired July 31 1989 A strike is likely said Mr Moore because management is unwilling to bargain in good faith Assuming a strike is called Mr Moore couldnt say if it would be a rotating strike or an all out general strike As well he couldnt predict exactly when a strike would be called but be sug gested it would be sooner rather than later As of Wednesday a Concilia tion Board which is considering the positions of both sides had not submitted its recommenda tions concerning the contract dispute to Marcel Denis the Federal Minister of Labor The recommendations were original ly to have been submitted Wednesday to the minister However Canada Post spokesperson Joyce Wells said Wednesday the Conciliation Darrell Moore Board was given a 14day exten sion to submit its recommenda tions to the minister Ms Wells explained when the recommendations are submitted to he minister he is permitted to consider them for as long as he wants Once the minister makes the recommendations public there is a sevenday waiting period before the union is in a legal strike position Mr Moore suggested a settle ment may be possible during this sevenday period Most past set tlements have been decided on during this period be said Ms Wells appears to be more optimistic a strike will be averted Both parties have been negotiating for almost two years and they are not going to throw that away she said Mr Moore said management and the union are at odds on several issues including contract length wages cost of living allowance COLA and job security According to a union release Continued on Page Dangerous escapee A prisoner from the Maplehurst Correctional Centre In Milton escaped from a work gang Wednesday say Regional Police Police say Leonard Gary Lan- dry 37 is in custody for a break and enter a weapons dangerous charge and assault and is con sidered violent Mr Landry was part of a work gang of prisoners from clearing bush at the Elliott Track Conservation Area on 2nd Line north of 15 Sideroad in Milton He had told his road boss that he dropped a pack of cigarettes in the bush The road boss let him go back unescorted to retrieve his cigarettes and reported him missing when he didnt return Police arent sure if a vehicle was involved in the escape Mr Landry is described as a white maid 180 cm tall and weighing approximately kg He has a very large chest and arms which sport a heart and dagger on his left forearm and a hawk on his right shoulder He also has Jason and Lisa wings tatooed on his left He has light brown hair spotted with grey and brown eyes At the time of his escape Mr Landry was wearing blue pants and a blue shirt issued by the Ministry of Correctional Ser vices police are following a tip from an anonymous caller who inform ed police Mr Landry might have escaped to help his brother in who is taking
