heat the directors and other volunteers have been busy preparing for the 78th Annual Ac ton Fall Fair This years fair is scheduled for the weekend of September 14 and 15th at Actons picturesque Prospect Park The unofficial theme for this years fair is Educate and Entertain The Homecraft Divisions theme is Ewe and Your Fair When you tour the hall watch for all the ex hibits that pertain to sheep School children are encouraged to enter the special contest adver tised through area schools Category A Picture of a sheep suitable for hanging Category B A free standing sheep made from wire paper rolls etc Competitions and attractions are being lined up to ensure that people of all ages will be able to have a most enjoyable lime The directors hope that everyone will come out and get involved in the many competition or simply relax and meet their friends Among this years highlights are the various displays put on by the area school children in cluding arts and crafts photography and many other ex citing activities In addition peo ple have a chance to show off their prize livestock or crops garden vegetables or Moms homemade pies and cakes For the younger crowd there are truck and tractor pulls pet shows petting zoos the Miss Acton contest and of course the midway with its thrilling rides and games of chance The Fair kicks off on Friday the with education taking the center stage School children and seniors are admitted free from am to 300 pm to view the numerous displays in the Community Center and on the fairgrounds On Friday night a special concert featuring the Guse Family will provide the musical entertainment with amusing interludes by Binky the Clown On Saturday the Fair gets into high gear starting with a parade through Town at noon The members of the Fair Board ex pect that the many floats and bands will make this parade a memorable one Come out and see who can shear a sheep the fastest or who can shoe a horse with the greatest of ease Of course the Fair just wouldnt be the Fair if the food booths werent busy cooking up a storm Sample the home cut fries or in dulge yourself with some good old fashioned candy floss For those so inclined the Spot dogs herding a flock of sheep Demonstrations will be at 2 pm and pm on Saturday In the evening a Teen Dance will be shaking the park from end to end Just when you think youve had enough excitement for Fair Its Worth The Drive police react quickly to shots fired Regional Police detec tives doubt that a volley of shots fired in the direction of four per sons in a Georgetown cornfield Monday were intentionally aimed at the unhurt farmworkers dont believe the persons shooting the guns were trying to hit these people said Detective Sergeant Keith doubt they even knew those peo ple were there He along with members of the tactical rescue unit team and close to other police officers two tracking police dogs and an OPP helicopter spent several hours Monday looking for clues in the field on Fourth Line south of 15 Sideroad the four farm workers had dived for safety while bullets ripped through corn stalks and tree leaves around them Police say John Parsons his wife and their son John and his wife Betty all of Woodstock were cutting grass and tidying up a field at the pro perty which had been worked by Mr Parsons late brother The family had just completed lunch and were returning to the field when unknown suspects opened fire Mr Parsons and the two women dived to the ground behind a nearby shed while John Parsons Jr jumped from the tractor he was driving and joined the rest of his family behind the shed When the shooting stopped briefly Mr Parsons got in his vehicle and drove to a phone to call police Sergeant said Mr Parsons himself believes the gunmen were only target shooting and likely were unaware he and his family were in the way of their fire A neighboring landowner also told police that he quite often hears shooting during the year and believes people target shoot in the area Both a helicopter sweep of the area and the tracking dogs failed to turn up any clues of the gunmen Police believe the shooters may have been using a semi automatic 22 calibre rifle a gun not labelled as restricted or pro hibited under the Criminal Code of Canada Det Sgt said if police catch the gunmen and determined here was no intent to harm or kill the victims the suspects could be charged with dangerous use of a firearm Obviously these people werent shooting in safe condi tions he said The police investigation is con tinuing Georgetown band hits right chords On July 31 radio station announced the Top finalists of its Homegrown contest for Torontoarea rock musicians The Georgetownbased band Shadows of Laughter was amongst this select group of ar tists This was quite an ac complishment considering ap proximately tapes were sub mitted to the radio station for evaluation To be in the Top is high praise indeed for the original alternativerock material this band is producing Shadows of Laughter featuring Sean Cotton Andy Jones and Rob Tumbull has been together less than a year and was com peting against many more ex perienced bands On Friday the Top 10 were an nounced The local band was not included a disappointment to its members and its followers However to have made such an impact on the music industry in Toronto in such a short time is certainly a sign of the potential that is yet to be uncovered in the Shadows of Laughter The band would like to thank its supporters the local merchants and club owners who have been very helpful during the past several months This autumn and winter SOL will continue to work in the Torontoarea clubs and hopes to do some concert dates for the Col leges and Universities in Ontario Feds contribute emergency funds The Honorable Marcel Masse has announced a Government of Canada contribution of to the Government of Ontario under terms of the Joint Emergency Preparedness Pro gram This is the sixth year of an ongoing program to enhance emergency preparedness in On tario municipalities The funds will help pay for 84 emergency preparedness projects throughout the province in cluding emergency rescue sup port systems emergency train ing and education courses and numerous emergency response vehicles This years funding adds to the financial support given to many programs in Ontario within the last two years
