Hockey always a surefire attention getter In sports nothing seems to get most peoples attention better than hockey especially in On The Maple Leafs arguably the worst team in the National Hockey League continue to pack the Gardens year after year anyway Being summertime I suppose articles about hockey are bound to be noticed anyway The Halton Hurricanes AAA hockey stories which have run in the paper recently definitely havent been an exception Shortly after each of the articles appeared I spoke with a number of people either called the office or met me during my travels around town Reaction about the articles focusing on differences the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association and Hurricanes have been having have ranged from those wondering why the GMHA is being shown as the bad guy to others who said the GMHA is trying to sabotage AAA hockey I dont happen to agree with either statement though I will admit that the mam purpose of this column is to clear up a few things First of all supporters from each of the hockey organizations have complained that not enough of their side of the story has been told and the other side has been given more space in the paper As I ve stated in this column before I wish I had the space to print everything that comes across my desk but- the reality is that the material has to be edited in order to make room for others i volleyball lacrosse tennis foot- Risky Business ball softball baseball soccer etc etc One area the GMHA was upset with was where Hurricane vice chairman Terry Brandt said many of the ice hours given by the GMHA were unused because they were in the early morning Hal Pelis the GMHA president said that t the case while Brandt said it was I suppose the only way to know for sure is to carefully go through last years ice booking receipts a job that would likely take a lot of time I wish I had Again if there was more space available that point could have been made clearer There are also questions about why Brandt past president of the Milton Minor Hockey tion couldnt find more ice time in Milton instead of needing most of it from Georgetown More space is needed to explain that Brandt said it was due to the high number of Georgetown players who lived in the Georgetown area making it easier to play closer to home Others argue that on many teams there were only a few Georgetown children Again another dive into waist deep records would be required to tally up the numbers accurate ly In any event hours of prac tice time per week has been secured in Milton for this season helping spread that load around more Lastly Id like to remind those who think the GMHA is trying to sabotage the AAA that Georgetown didnt have to give them any ice time at all or en courage players for that matter On the other side try to remember that AAA hockey is new and still trying to find its feet so mistakes are bound to happen Above all the main goal is to make sure the kids have fun and find themselves challenged lets Eileen Saville had 16 OTooles Tyke baseball team captures Sarnia tourney silver Two weeks ago OTooles travelled to Sarnia in hopes of finishing with a winning record After losing a close game to Windsor the team jelled together During the first game for OTooles Sean Hardcastle led the way with a double single walk and four stolen bases Also con tnbuting were Robert MacLeod with two RBIs Isaac Ferguson and Geoff Bahr collecting singles and Mark Trevor Rich and Geoff Bahr each stole two bases In game two Georgetown pull ed together beating Windsor Andrew Nelisson led the way with a triple double and single He also had four RBIs and scored three runs Devon earned the win Hardcastle continued his stealing ways by taking three bags Game three proved much closer against Oakndge with Georgetown OTooles emerging with a win Brent McClung Andrew Nelisson and Robert MacLeod scored two runs each with Isaac Ferguson adding two MacLeod Bahr and added singles After much deliberation was determined that Georgetown OTooles had earned a spot in the playoffs In the semi finals they had to face Sarnia A The game finished after five innings with Georgetown coming away with a win With so many runs the highlights were Hardcastle Fraser and with four each Isaac Ferguson and Ryan added three each Geoff Bahr earned the win with Greg pitching a scoreless and Ryan Smith coming off the bench to add a stolen base and RBI In the finals Georgetown faced last years Ontario champions Chiefs Although ing a chance in the middle inn ings with the bases loaded and one out they produce the much needed hits The final score was Scoring for Georgetown were Isaac Ferguson Mark Fed chyshyn and Devon ing the three victories the most valuable player awards were given to Brent McClung Geoff Bahr and Andrew Coaches comments Our team is beginning to come together We have nine players that are in their first year of Rep and our record at this time including tournaments is 12 and 14 As manager I
