the HERALD Wednesday August 1991 News Feature Terra Cotta Postman just might go fishing By LISA The Herald For the first time in 29 years Morris Puckering of Terra Cotta will spend his summer fishing in stead of deli venog the mail When Mr Puckering learned Canada Post had relieved him of his duties from delivering mail to over 285 homes in Terra Cotta he decided it was time to take his fishing rod down from the shelf and take a summer vacation the first hes had since he started delivering the mail in 1963 While hes making plans to go fishing many residents in Terra Cotta are still objecting to the fact hes gone hook line and sinker So far over 300 residents have signed a petition protesting Canada Post decision to replace Mr Puckering with a postman who submitted a lower tender for the malt route and was awarded the contract Many more have been writing local and Toronto papers expressing their anger that a man with years of service was rejected for a cheaper mailman Mr Puckering is a man who has been loya for 29 years who would do all the extras without flinching or asking for over time wrote Terra Cotta resi dent Penny Richardson to the Toronto Star Our is not a tough businessman not a man proteted by the union not a man to put up a fight against the likes of a corporation like Canada Post But she like many others have taken up the fight for him Peter Glavicik Heather Warn Joan Hunter and Mary Lou Ray mond collected names for the petition and presented It to Halton Peel MP Garth Turner last week hoping for change Mr Turner said he has sent the letter to Ottawa and requested a response from Canada Post I want to make Canada Post aware that people in the com munity want the system review ed he said The current system isnt fair because Canada Post has no process for people to appeal Canada Post has already decid ed It awarded the mail route con tract a fiveyear deal to Karen Smith of Brampton July was Mr last day on the job Deborah Harron a media relations officer with Canada Posts regional head office in Toronto said awarding mail route contracts is a business deci sion Community opinion does not necessarily affect Canada Posts decision she said Financial and service matters are taken in to consideration for the final analysis She would not elaborate on the particulars of Mr situation because its private in formation but admitted she knew Fire Calls Dumpster ignites Halton Hills firefighters filled a garbage with water Satur day afternoon to douse flames that were seen flickering from the top Firefighters say the located at Harrison Public School in Georgetown was not damaged from the fire A search of the dumpster contents turned up a small red gas can which firefighters believe may have had a part in how the blaze started Once the fire was put out the water was drained from the dumpster False alarm Firefighters walked down the fitness trail at Cedarvale Park Mon day after a caller said he had smelled smoke in the woods along the trail Firefighters didnt detect any smoke smell or fire Emergency funding from Page I corporate additional base station with an emergency operations centre 96 for medical and public education programs and the instating of a mobile com post which cost 27 For 1990 in Hills 556 was given to extend a communication system to in corporate one radio voting system Also last year in Region 925 was provided for a communication study to link regional and municipal public works departments with an overall communications system This payment represents con tinuing Government of emergency preparedness projects Ontario For further information please contact Wayne Regional Director Ontario Emergency Preparedness Canada at all about the public outcry against Mr Puckenngs dismissal through Mr Turners inquiry into the matter This is the first time that I know of that there been such a public response to a contract she said No one has been more surpns ed about the support for Mr Puckering than the man himself I was really amazed by all this he admitted But I really appreciate the support He said hes facing the situa tion realistically I expected other people to tender for the route because there are a lot of people looking for work he said dont think my tender was really high and when they asked me if I wanted to retender for the route I said I couldnt because I was going broke quicker than Id intended I dont blame other people for trying for the route he said I just dont see how they can make any money if they tendered much lower than me All Mary Lou Raymond knows is that many people will miss Mr Puckenngs service He did small services for dif ferent that were never re quirements in his contract she said He would do special things like deliver parcels to seniors so they wouldnt have to go to the store She knows how much people respected him because she work ed with him at the Terra General Store and post office for years and never heard a com plaint about the man or his ser vice Presently Mr Puckering is looking for work He said if the new mail lady decided to drop the route he woud take back for the rate he tendered That could be a real possibility because the same thing happened to two female mail deliverers in Georgetown in May Phyllis Stewart who delivered the 3 Georgetown mail and 2 mail route deliverer Joan Hayes lost their jobs May when another person under bid their tenders and was awarded the contract Less than a week later both ladies had their jobs back for the rate they tendered NORVAL NEWS Special birthday By KAY
