Risky baseball predictions made as season winds down As a local television sports an is fond of saying How about those Blue Jays I know I complained in last week column about how the team provided very little worth watching recent but they more than made up for it this past weekend In a series they had to win Jays took out the hated Tigers 2 1 With the Tigers nipping at their heel Jays wound up gain a game For some reason Toronto has always had trouble with Motown especially late in the season remember B7 A lot of people have said this is the year for Toronto to go all the way but the Jays had to prove they could at least handle teams from what is arguably the weakest division in the majors Toronto definitely had its fans worried when they collapsed against Boston recently The question remains as to how Toronto will do against the west division teams notably which is struggling to stay ahead of Chicago in that pennant race I sure Jays are relieved they re finished with the White Sox which has been extremely hot lately All the postulations about the outcome of the final month against the west teams could be moot if Toronto takes advantage J Risky Business by Robert Risk of its final few series against east division teams There are six games against Baltimore four in Cleveland and seven with New York all are teams that have no realistic chance of reaching first place Hopefully the Jays will be able to build enough of a lead from those matches to allow themselves the luxury of playing 500 or even ball the rest of the way and still win the division If they do Toronto could be the first swing team in baseball historytowinitall Though the pitchers have had some trouble lately it s been the lack of offense that has kept the rest of the division so close to Toronto With more runs now be ing produced most notably against the Tigers the Jays could really pull away if they can com bine the two in a string of games As with my hockey playoff predictions which too bad this year its time to stick my neck out on the basepaths It 11 be the Jays against Min in the American League while Pittsburgh and Los Angeles battle it out in the National League I d prefer to see St Louis beat out Pittsburgh in the east but time running out For the World Series I d say it going to be Toronto and Los Angeles with the Jays being the first Canadian team to take home
