predicted by Halton Region Chairman the Herald Region will be facing an environmental disaster if the Ac ton dump proposal and the planned expansion of quarrying activity at the Acton quarry are allowed to go ahead says Peter Halton Region Chairman During a Regional Planning and Public Works Committee meeting Wednesday Chairman Pomeroy justified this alarming comment saying the two issues are m- The Acton quarry is located on both sides of Sideroad just south of Acton The quarrys owner United Aggregates is currently ex tracting aggregate from the site north of Sideroad However committee members learned Wed nesday the company in accordance with its quarry licence intends to quarry the site south of Sideroad As a member of a consortium of companies that comprise Milton- based Reclamation Systems In corporated RSI United Aggregates is also behind the Ac ton dump proposal The dump site is proposed for that part of the Ac ton quarry north of Sideroad 22 once the extraction operation is com pleted Calling the projects asinine Chairman Pomeroy said the Region Pete Pomeroy must do everything possible to prevent the proposals from going ahead No one should believe Acton and Georgetowns water supply wont be negatively impacted if quarry blasting is permitted next to a dump said the Chairman The quarry sits on top of the Amabel aquifer a major water source for the Halton Hills area Directing his attention to Regional lawyer Mark Meneray Chairman Pomeroy directed staff to determine what legal means Halton has available to prevent the projects from happening The direction came in the wake of a committee recommendation calling for the Niagara Escarpment Commission NEC and the province to review United Aggregates quarry licence Committee members expressed concern that the companys licence as it stands permits United Aggregates to quarry two recognized environmentally sen sitive areas on its property south of Sideroad 22 At the very leastthe province should prevent United Aggregates from quarrying these two recognized areas committee mem bers agreed The recommendation also calls for the NEC to determine if the companys quarrying activity com plies with the Niagara Escarpment Plan The recommendation will go before Regional Council for final approval this Wednesday- United Aggregates represen tative Brent Clarkson appeared before committee members to op pose the recommendation The recommendation should be rejected said Mr because the provinces Ministry of Natural Resources recognizes the companys licence as valid As well the MNR con siders the quarry active he said In response Milton Regional Councillor Bill Johnson said MNR is in bed with the aggregate in dustry always has been and always will be Prosperity predicted for Halton as the the Communitys population increases Election declarations Two more local residents have declared their candidacy In the Nov municipal election Incumbent French- language trustee on the Catholic school board Ken Norman is seeking reelection while in cumbent Ward 2 Hydro Com missioner Murt Allison is also after another term in off Ice Contacted Wednesday Mr Nor man said he is seeking reelection to ensure School gets a new building by 1993 Thats when the lease on the schools current home the old School expires Mr Allison couldnt be reached for comment because he is away on vacation
