the HERALD Wednesday October 1991 Community News Arts Alive Awards Award winners to be recognized this Saturday John Sommer has been chosen by the Arts committee to receive the Ralph Award for Volunteerism in the Arts Since arriving in Halton Hills in 1962 and setting up the Gallery House Sol John has been an avid of the Arts He has promoted with enthusiasm the arts and his home Gallery House Sol has been used to show works by distinguished artists as well as local artists With the building of the Art Gallery at the Cultural Centre John brought his art expertise to the Friends of the Gallery Through his efforts the shows have grown in quality over the years In May 1989 John introduced a column in the Herald Arts and Ideas Through this column he has helped make the community aware of the Arts in many forms Over the years he has been an enthusiastic and knowledgeable voice for the Visual Arts as well he enjoys the op portunity of reviewing the local plays Collecting of Art has been a Som family tradition for hundreds of years and John has lent his ex pertise to the community by en couraging collectors and artists to make donations of art works to the library with the hopes that one day the collection will grow into a fine art museum Since July John has arranged over 30 exhibits for the Gallery at the Culture Centre and since 1989 has been of the March exhibit To help celebrate the 10th An of the Cultural Centre he has put together the current show in the gallery Ten Years to Remem ber When providing a list of his achievments to the committee John stated this list is no a boast but an illustration how the chief librarian and her staff the Friends of Halton Hills libraries and myself worked together to give Halton Hills high quality art exhibitions Local Halton Hills residents ran and Frank Anthony known for their as a team in the visual arts are the recipients of the Arts Alive Award for Visual Arts The Anthonys first became in volved in the arts by answering an ad in 1967 for oil painting classes and since then have been deeply in volved in the arts community In 1978 they both became involved in the formation of a and Pencil Club and their volunteering really started Fran was the treasurer for three years of the and Pencil club and helped organize set up and run several shows At the same time Frank was elected secretary of the Credit Valley Artisans in 1983 and became President in a postion he held for five years In Fran took over as treasurer of the Credit Valley Artisans a position she still holds frank on the other hand was in volved in the Pallette and Pencil Club as President for to and again in to If all this was not enough for the Anthonys ran over the past year has been in charge of coordinating and setting up display
