when the leaves change color and the gardens are gathered in How many people have you heard lately express their absolute delight about It seems to me that at least per cent of the people with I speak tell me how much they like this season I myself was recently enjoy the beauty and variety of col or as I motored into the city to at tend a dinner in honor of a man who has been retired for many years but whose life reminds one of the beauty of Fall It occurred to me that those same people who just love the Fair may not be so enthusiastic about matunng and growing old themselves When did it happen in society that matunng into and growing was considered a wonderful thing for plants yet the same time for humans was less than desirable even could beabhorenf It is true that much advertising and promotion has been done over the last decade or two to per human beings that old does not have to be bad Even the name of a seniors TV program which can be seen regularly reminds us of this It is called The Best Is Yet To Come Even so among many there is still real fear of the day when work responsibilities will cease and others will take over the power decisions and the respon for the future As seniors we can be grateful to those who are making a real fort to show that aging has its own responsibilities I have lived in a society where the cultural knowledge and responsibility was not passed on until after the ly was raised and so by the time that one had practised a bit he or she was entering the aging years Could we as these people did take a lesson from the leaves The rules of the universe usually apply fairly consistently across all areas of life I am sure that we can learn from the leaves that are not fed and watered during their prime and drop off prematurely or only go brown They can tell us as many educators are now doing how important it is for we humans to keep ourselves fed on the things that really matter Or to look at it from the beautiful side of things perhaps the wonderful colors of Fall are just a sign of how all life human as well as plant may mature in beauty and glory so that all of life may be enriched by that beauty and made and full by the matunty which aging allows Of course there is another side to Fall the time when everything is brown windy and colder a time when it is hard to keep warm and find anything beautiful to look at Perhaps this is the part of the aging year to which humans in the past have looked for their example to how aging comes to the human race If so I guess it is time to change our style of thinking To get back to the dinner men earlier I sat beside a very interesting grad of who had served in a responsible position for the university for ten years after his retirement not even in the area in which his life
