the HERALD Community Wednesday October 23 Environmentalist describes perfect candidate By JOAN DAVISON Herald Special THE ENVIRONMENTALLY- FRIENDLY COUNCILLOR Very soon now Halton residents will be voting to elect new town and regional councillors Since I am an environmentalist and a concerned one let me explain the outlook of the candidate who would get my vote My hypothetical candidate would know in his or her gut that the world is a web not a chain Everything affects everything else There is no free lunch And I mean everything Halton is not an isolated unit of land separated from Ontario from Canada from North America from the World Really understanding that fact this potential councillor would know that the decisions made here this year will have For All Your Fine China Silvtf Crystal GHtware MAIN ST MILTON 8780050 reverberations much beyond the bounds of Halton and much beyond the bounds of time anyone spends in office The new councillor would take it as a task to find out as much about environmental degradation as possible This person would then be very worried So worried that hisher primary commit ment would not be to the people who elected himher but to the land Why Because without the land no one lives No one And we are destroying the land Knowing this my candidate would construct a political plat form NO to the Acton quarry landfill Why Because it is almost certain to pollute our water source We need clean water NO to the quarry expan sion Why Because quarrying destorys trees Many trees And trees are the world lungs To further development Watt Wait until exhaustive studies fer ret out every potential negative environment impact Maybe wait along time Yes to frequent subsidized public transport Why Because you can fit more people into a bus than into a car Yes to increased taxes on cars Actually I realize this is a provincial jurisdiction but our candidate could lobby Why Because this combined with frequent public transit would discourage people from owning cars a major contributor to global warming No to industry that generates garbage pollutes the air and paves over precious land land that could grow more trees and food Yea only to industry that aims for zero discharge and uses a minimum amount of land My councillor would lead by ex ample No pesticides would go on hisher lawn the house would be free of hazardous household cleaners organic and additive free foods would grace hisher table My councillor would be seen walking to work and to meetings Knowing that the af fluent money rich lifestyle is environmentally unfriendly my candidate would announce that heshe would take a reduction in the councillor s stipend By doing this hisher constituents would be encouraged to tighten their own belts This councillor would tell it like it is Instead of offering the pro- Community Service Bulletins It you are a non profit organ izatlon service club or chanty or church group and would like us publish your community ser vice
