Tame candidates face the voters The Herald Unlike previous allcandidate meetings during this municipal election campaign Tuesdays meeting for Wards 1 and 2 at Acton High School could best be described as tame Given the relatively few questions asked by the audience of approximately during the Hills Chamber of Com merce- sponsored meeting audien ce members were there more to listen to the candidates than challenge them However some questions were asked that received applause from the audience and put the candidates on the hot seat Ward resident Alex McKee asked Mayoralty candidates Rob Barlow and Miller whether they would help initiate a non- biased committee to look into the feasibility of dismantling Regional government Mr acknowledged the question may be unfair since it is akin to asking whether the two would build their own coffin Both candidates agreed Hills residents are over taxed and the suggestion was a good one They assured Mr McKee they would establish the appropriate committee as soon as possible if elected I first got elected to Regional government because I opposed it Candidate withdraws a candidate for Hills Hydro Commissioner in Ward 2 has withdrawn from the Nov 12 municipal election Mr Medland contacted the Herald Monday explaining he has withdrawn from the election because of an illness in theianuly I feel I couldnt properly represent the constituents pension of the United Aggregates quarry south of Mr Barlow said he opposes the ex pansion but provided no solutionon how the expansion could be stop ped He acknowledged the quarry company has a licence to expand the quarry operation Mr Barlow continued by saying if the wells of neighboring residents went dry because of the expansion those residents should be com pensated Mr Miller said he supports the quarry expansion because the quarry is a major source of em believe the quarry can be ex panded while protecting the wetlan in the area He didnt elaborate Not surprisingly they both spoke out against the Acton dump proposal Mr Miller advocated the Town continue to pressure the provincial government to kill the dump proposal and prevent it from going through an expensive En vironmental Assessment hearing Mr Barlow countered by saying he is concerned with the Town depending on provincial govern ment to stop the dump proposal He said the Town should challenge the issue through the courts Regional and Town Councillor candidates for Wards were all asked to state their position on the possibility of a new arena in Acton Regional councillor candidate for Ward Rick said he sup ports
