the HERALD Page 12- Peoples Forum Wednesday November 6 1991 Scandalous campaigning decried in municipal elections Dear Editor There they go again Early every Wednesday morn ing I used to look forward to put ting on the coffee and reading the local paper chuckling over the weekly happenings In a unique and friendly town such as ours many people places and events are very familiar to us all What I would give to see these times return Incumbents Face Charge of Illegal Campaign Practice Political Pumpkins Regional Council Challenger Files a Complaint All Candidates Nights Set But Not Without a Struggle Serjeant son Feeling Slandered by Accusations of Il legal Triplex Mayor Rejects Criticism Over Support for Campaign Backer These are the headlines of to day Its obvious its election time but we have never been subjected to this kind of scan dalous campaigning before It appears that the same group of candidates seeking a seat on the next council are at the source of all the controversial issues hit ting the headlines these days Is the purpose of campaigning not to share with the voting public your own personal credentials what you can offer to our town and your personalitiy assets To attack the credentials of in cumbents slander our local Chamber of Commerce and ridicule the opponents are not recognized in our town as ac cepted or professional means of running a campaign The local people are proud of the people who represent their in terests in council within the town staff in the business community and in our daily lives as we live and work together with them They may not be perfect There may be better candidates but to condemn them only slanders this group of new candidates reputa tion Be careful though because not all new candidates are stoop ing to this drastic cry for support Ask your candidates these ques tions How long have you lived in town Do you and your family work in our town 3 Do you and your family do your shopping within town 4 Do you live in a moderately new house but are opposed to new development 5 Do you support a local pro test group or are you genuinely concerned about our local character What part of your spare time do you contribute to local service or business groups What involvement do you have in local arts and culture groups What local sports do you POWER questioned To the Editor has stated they are not in support of any election can didates Why is it that POWER is spending members money to publish candidates survey results in local papers stating positions of election candidates Wasnt this money donated for and to be used to fight the dump Why were survey questions on ly developed by special interest group members including ICE POWER Main St S Ratepayers and Main St Citizens same objective group members have their names in cluded on candidates campaign literature candidate nomination papers and are campaign workers Are they trying to take over our town Has forgotten its mandate to stop the RSI dump or is there a new mandate to STOP everything in town Perhaps P OW ERs focus has become blurred Yours truly Andy Courchesne Say t saw it Herald ELECT GRANT EMMERSON WARD 3 COUNCILLOR THE MAN YOU CAN COUNT ON GINNYS
