will participate in Carolfest at Knox Presbyterian Church on Dec at pm This much shorter journey shares the music of Christmas to inspire energy optimism and goodwill in the community It lets us look together upward at a star not inward worry frustration and disappointment The music reaches out setting the mood for the season and the year if we let it Thats the serious Carolfest is fun for young and old Songs alternate between the choirs and the full congregation Local choir directors have selected the music and will con duct their pieces A Dale Wood will lead and play for many of the massed numbers and will be sup ported by Hadyn Evans van Dyke Paulette Thibeault and Sharon Choirs are always looking for choristers If a stranger asks you your name dont be shy he will probably be recruiting you for his choir If you see Dale Wood walk ing around the church with his head half tilted he is listening for voices to invite to join the Georgetown Choral Society so the concert isnt totally innocent But sing out and have fun anyway and bring the kids There is no admission charge for Carolfest A voluntary collec tion will be taken up and the money given to the North Halton Distress Centre Re Briefs EFW support Garbage incineration should be investigated thats the message Halton Hills Regional Councillor Rick Bonnette gave to Halton Regional Planning and Public Works Committee members Wed nesday Despite recent criticism con cerning garbage incineration by local residents Bonnette sub mitted a Toronto Sun article to committee members advocating that Energy from Waste EFW processes be investigated In the article the provincial used in such countries as Japan and Germany NEC nominations Regional Planning and Public Works Committee recom mended Wednesday the names of local Regional Councillors Marilyn Serjeantson and Bill Robson be for warded to the province as can- for membership on the Niagara Escarpment Commission The recommedation will go before Regional Council for final approval this Wednesday Committee members also re elected Coun Serjeantson as Works Committee Christmas arrives early at Region Ontario Environment Minister Ruth has committed an ad ditional million to Halton Region to help fund the Regional landfill in Milton confirmed Halton Chair man Peter Wednesday The provincial money is being made available under the Financial Assistance Program PAP The funding will be spread over the provinces and 1992- 93 fiscal years It wasnt as much as I would have hoped for but its a decent Christmas present Chairman told Regional Planning and Public Works Committee mem bers The landfills construction costs have skyrocketed from million to 51 million over the past few years because of provincial en vironmental regulations Chairman Pomeroy explained he had recently met with Ms Grier concerning a 10year provincial fun ding commitment to the landfill but was told such monies were unavailable in the budget In a letter to Mr regar ding the grant Ms Grier stated the monies may be used to finance capital costs incurred in the development of the landfill site in such a way as to enable to stabilize its tipping fee at the 1991 rate Based on the provinces offer committee members recommended Haltons waste management tipping fee for the disposal of solid waste be reduced from per tonne to the current rate of Itiat means Hills will pay Halton Region per tonne of gar bage it deposits in the Regional lan dfill Committee members also recom mended local municipalities pay a fee to the Region per ton ne of recyclable material it collects and processes Both recommedations will go before Council for final con sideration this Wednesday If the recommendations receive approval then the Towns total ex penditure on waste management for next year is expected to in crease by per cent Despite the additional provincial money is still expected to incur a shortfall of to its 1992 waste management budget for charity Carolling for charity is what Georgetown resident Paul Gardiner and six of his friends are doing this Christmas season The Georgetown District High School student has recruited some of his friends to entertain Georgetown residents this holiday season in aid of Halton Womens Place The idea blossomed into song a few months ago when Mr Gardiner heard a presentation about Womens Place a temporary home for abused women and their children He like many others knew nothing about the shelters existen ce but feeling he could do something to aid this lowprofile charity he offered to be a volun teer The problem Halton Womens Place deals with abuse against women and children is a bigger issue than most people realize he said When he contacted the home he was encouraged to become a fun draiser for the shelter and since he and many of his friends are musicians he decided to use their musical talents to do the fun- As all this came about during the Christmas season it seemed logical to try and earn money by carolling Well be singing at homes and canvassing doortodoor said Mr Gardiner and well also be pop ping up on streetcorners everywhere The group comprised of students Lisa Sheppard Ian Lisa Hitchcock and Chris Gawley will be performing acappella on various days before Christmas Besides collecting monetary donations the group is also ac cepting canned goods for the shelter Halton Womens Place provides a compassionate secure and non- judgemental temporary home for abused women and their children The home has room for 18 abused women and children for up to six weeks While in the home women and children are provided with meals and emergency clothing in formation and referrals to the necessary support services a childrens support program volun teer transportation to appointments when possible employment in formation and legal information The shelter also operates a crisis line 24 hours a day seven days a week for women For more information on
