1 991 A great year in sports in Halton Hills By STEVEN The Herald As a newcomer to the Halton Hills area only a few short months ago I must say Ive been very impressed with the quality of and dedication to sports in this community a com mumty small in size but spor the brief time I have been in charge of sports at the paper have quickly come to realize the vast talent that exists amongst athletes both young and old in Hills was a year that showed Region and the entire province that athletes in this community can compete with the best Ontano has to offer In November Georgetown tenntal Middle School took the volleyball scene by storm with both the female and male volleyball teams capturing the Provincial Cup his was the first time in provincial competition that a school took both titles Coming off this impressive high the male and female Centennial Chargers went on to add some more hardware to their winnings both capturing the North Cham pionships and two weeks later both claiming the titles against Burlingtons Rolling Meadows Turning to high school volleyball the Georgetown District High School Rebels both junior and senior had outstanding seasons of their own The junior squad took an undefeated regular season into the playoffs where their won the finals while the seniors lost only one regular season match up and were beaten in the finals Other big sports news in eluded the senior girls field hockey team making it to the semi finals in regional competition and the junior girl s cross country team led by and Jodie Johnson captured the Halton title was the year the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders Junior B hockey club breath new life into Halton Hills hockey fans and the entire JumorBwest division After a terrible season Raider President Finn Poulstrup went hunting for new talent He acquired long time local coach Charlie Hanman to lead the team and the two added a number of new players to the roster including a great combination in Ben Hennch and The Raiders were honored with Organization of the Century by the Hockey Association during their home opener and also signed an affiliation Strom a new Junior A hockey club in the The Raiders who were stationed near the basement of the Junior B west division most of last season now hold a strong record of 14 wins losses and four ties and are in third place Georgetown Linda Kirk also made news in 1991 playing a major role in Canada capturing the gold in the World Triathlon Cham in Australia Other high lights of the year m eluding youth tennis star Victor representing Ontano in national tennis competition student John Jicklng being named one of the top 10 athletes for Southern in the Toronto Star and Trevor com in both Junior B hockey member of the Raiders and high school football During one football game he scored an outstanding four touchdowns and ran for over yards 1991 also saw a new Georgetown Baseball Association president in Donna Blight the first female president in league history It also saw the start of monthly sports car and comic shows at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena for local card collectors At this time I think its ap propriate to also recognize all the coaches trainers referres co and parents in Halton Hills all of whom play a vital role in this sports community and without whom the high level of competition in all sports here would not exist has been a great year for sports in Hills and Im to have been part of it and look for ward to an exciting and productive 1992 sports year Sundiy December Page 21 To Schedule Squash Results 22 Golden Bowling
