a powerful surprise when he visited Georgetown Dec Protect Our Water and En vironmental POWER protesters greeted Premier Rae with shouts and placards calling for his rejection of the Acton dump proposal and jeered when he refused to answer to claims that he forgot his election promises He was in Georgetown to of ficially open the new engineering research and technology centre at MoldMasters on Armstrong Avenue and 20 protesters didnt miss the chance to address some of their concerns They also asked the premier what he was doing to prevent the establishment of a dump on the Niagara Escarpment POWER protester Rita Landry complete with toilet seat around her head asked are you going to kill the dump or kill my kids premier responded by laying the responsibility on the shoulders of Environment Minister Ruth After further calls for action the premier responded by saying that is not my job He said he does not have the authority but will bring the demonstration to the attention of Minister Grier You have a responsibility to the environment and so does the gover nment but the government also has a responsibility to the process said Premier The process is always important The government cant be seen to be or act ar bitrarily After the premier left many protesters seemed disappointed with his responses Ive heard that rhetoric before said Diane van Two years ago when he was here himself said it wasnt a suitable site for a landfill and there was no reason to go further with it Now four years later were still fighting against it Two nurses have taken to barhop- to spread the message about AIDS Public nurses Anne Todd and Julia Arnold visited OTooles in Georgetown to inform the public about AIDS Acquired Im munodeficiency Syndrome As part of a new program by the Halton Health Department Ms Todd and Ms Arnold were handing out colored condoms and in formation m order to teach young people about the dangers of AIDS and how to protect themselves The idea is to reach the group of people who typically havent had any AIDS education in the school system said Ms Todd She said people in the to age group are the ones who arent reached in the school system and that is where per cent of the AIDS cases are Its a great idea What better place than here said Wanda of Terra Cotta This is where spontaneous things often happen Although many patrons were en thusiastic about the program some felt they had heard enough about AIDS I dont think a lot of people who come to a bar want to talk about sexually transmitted diseases said Jim ODonnell of Georgetown Others thought people would feel intimidated or embarrassed to ask questions of nurses about AIDS To make the patrons feel more comfortable Ms Todd and Ms Ar nold set up a table with condoms and information and waited for people to come and talk They dress casually and try to keep a relatively lowkey profile Pamphlets entitled Aids in- the 90s The New Facts of Life and a quiz called How Safe Are You were available at the booth the nur ses set up in bars The Acton Sabres trounced Dec 15 bringing its record to put the first goal on the board early in the first period but Acton came back with three quick goals by Craig Adam Hilts and Jason Lucas Sabres managed to net four more goals in the second period with Greg Powell holding off attackers The four goals were put in by Hilts Rob Lang Jay Jasper and Cull en
