the HERALD Editorial Sunday January I Home Newspaper of Hills Established A Division of Thomson Newspapers Company limited Guelph Street Georgetown L7G ROBERT MALCOLMSON Publisher and General Manager 8772201 GIBSON Managing Editor Happy New Year Ring out the old Ring in the new Welcome people to 1992 Here we are in the third year of the last decade of this centuryone touted as the most glorious time in mankinds still wondering why Why are people throughout the world still dying from starvation Why do people still judge the worth of a person by the color of the skin religious belief or place of birth in stead of the individuals own innate uniqueness Why is it that we cant use our supposed intelligence to find cures for diseases but can find more than enough brain power and money to devise and develop sophisticated weaponry to kill each other Why do politicians insist on treating the citizenry as knownothings salved by the sugarcoated pill trust me- they get elected Why is it people who want to work cant find jobsyet those who dont want to work get paid to do nothing Yes we certainly are an enlightened bunch we humans Unless and until we begin to believe in and trust each other and work together for the common good will be much like most of the other years of this centurysomething to be forgotten rather than remembered Happy New Year Community Forum Reflections of 1 991 SHAH There has been massive changes in the world power structure but I believe these changes arent all that massive when it comes nght down to it The wall in Germany has come down but its still there in peoples minds and not many changes have come about through the Middle East peace process LYNN FERGUSON GLEN WILLIAMS Its been a challenging year The depressed economy has affected everybody Internationally the political scene was full of surprises which we will feel the repercussions of for some time Peoples Forum Canadians being stripped of all will To the editor I seem to be one of the few who does not want to take this situa tion sitting on my backside and saying nothing When will the people of this pro vince and country realize we are being stripped of all will to either work or become productive in a country thai we all say is rich in minerals and resources We have allowed our govern ment to rob us all blind at will if it isnt this tax its another tax While our elected governments give it away by the truck load billion to Indian tribes they cant account for Mr Mulroney million hers million there it doesnt mat ter folks lets stock the senate pass a GST to get more cash to spend The metric conversion seems to be ours alone to suffer with We were ripped of then and are still sitting and saying why Fuel Thats a joke folks They said gas is going up for the war in the Middle East I feel that war has been over for many moons Has fuel come down No sir The I ask what is the difference between gas prices in Georgetown and Acton In Georgetown cents and in Ac ton Do we all seem so stupid that we dont know we are being npped off by the major oil com panies as weil as the govern ment Interesting experience Dear Editor Thank you for giving the grade one students such an interesting experience They came back to school very excited and ready to talk write paint and draw about the things they had seen and learned about putting together a newspaper These short trips arc a vital link between the classroom and the community Thankyou for your time Sincerely Jordan Grade 1 Teacher George Kennedy S We pay and pay and pay but I ask why Is that the Canadian thing to do Are we all serfs who would rather be bled to death than fight for whats right- honesty and fair play One last note Free Trade Now thats the biggest joke of all For all the companies that benefitted two hundred thousand Canadians lost their jobs and more will follow Our politicians say do you think we need to develop our welfare programs more Those in cabinet out and ask the same stupid questions We are bleeding folks and Ottawa and Queens Park dont give a damn TAX the people more they say Tax smokes and booze we will drain the whole system of life Then they leave office and say What a mess were in There are some good hard working honest people out here who are not leeching the system paying these taxes but let me assure everyone and I am not the only one thinking this the USA is not far away I love Canada and all its splen dor but lord its difficult to believe this is the land of milk and honey and thats only if you are productive We need help to get off being a welfare state Thankyou David Environment ministry still treading water Dear Editor Re Quarry pumps water over legal limit Herald article Dec 11 I read with much interest your article concerning the Acton Quarry in which the Ministry of the Environment confirmed that the United Aggregates quarry has on occasion been breaking the law by pumping over the legal limits of its water taking permit- of one million imperial gallons of water per day This excess pump ing is putting a further strain on the water levels of the acquifer which is serving our community What is the Ministry of En vironments solution to this con travention of the ministrys own regulation you ask Perhaps lay ing charges against United Ag gregates recinding its permit or at the very least demanding that United Aggregates pump water only within the limits of their per mit No The Ministry says that it will probably change United Ag gregates permit to accomodate the levels that they have been il legally pumping all along Is there a parallel here Will this be the solution when the Ac ton quarry landfill exceeds the limits of pollution into the Black Creek and precious groundwater supply as it will inevitably will do Will the ministry just change the regulations again to ac commodate them Thanks Ministry of Environ ment for your hardline approach to upholding your own regula tions Water quantity or water quality this is totally unaccep table Lets stop this landfill p o p a 1 before its too late Now is the time for ALL residents of Hills to write letters outlining your with the Acton quarry landfV proposal for its 45day review which ends Jan 17 A long letter would be great a one page outline will do or even a couple of sentences is better than no let ter at all Address your concerns to Honourable Ruth Grier 15th Floor St Clair Ave West Toronto Ont with a copy to Premier Bob Main Building Queens Park Toronto Ont M7A To be a part of the actual review the letters must be addressed to Mrs Gner Dont put it
