Georgetown Cinema directed by Nicholas Meyer is the latest in the big screen voyages of the Starship Enterprise led by Captain Kirk played by the irrepressible William Shatner Having restored whales to the world put musclebound Khan back in his place and put Spock Leonard back together the crew of the Enterprise is mandated in Star Trek VI to be a cosmic mid wife to the birth of a new union between the Federation and the The plot skillfully follows cur rent world events It would seem that technology has gotten out of hand in the Klingon Empire and to address the negative effects on the environment spending must be diverted from military needs In order to do this the Klingons must seek peace with the Federa tion sound familiar Negotiations are initiated by Spock who volunteers the Kirk is caught bet ween his duty and his hatred for the who were responsi ble for the murder of his son Kirks counterpart Chang is played by Christopher Chang is a Cold War warrior not prepared to give up the good old days of military honor and glory Plummer plays the role of Chang with a passion and in the process steals the show Star Trek VI offers a fast paced script liberally spiced with special effects starship battles alien creatures and some great sets such as a frozen planet that parallels a Soviet gulag As with the latter Star Trek films number VI offers a good measure of whimsical selfdepreciating humor particularly between Kirk and McCoy Kelley DeForest as they try to escape the frozen planet Unfortunately the full impact of this humor can only be appreciated by a full- fledged Trekkie There are some new additions to the operation of the Enterprise When Kirk comes on the bridge everyone snaps to attention in military fashion This is not a practical show of respect for a senior officer when youre zipping through the galaxy at Warp and have to let go of the controls It also detracts from the team play orientation of the Enterprise and flat hierarchical reporting structure Senior of ficials are also piped aboard Both additions are unnecessary and unwelcome after 25 years of Star Trek history A linkage to the current televi sion series Star Trek TNG is made by actor Michael Dorn who plays on the new series and Warfs father in number a If youre a Trekkie or youll like this film It is not their best but still a lot of fun If youre not ready to Warp
