Halton Hills youngsters are big on card collecting Like many sports fans I was into the card collecting scene during my youth in a big way Despite the fact that J sold all my cards at a flee market for next to nothing years ago and cheated myself out of a small fortune I would say it was one of the best par ts of my childhood spending en hours trading and purchasing hockey and baseball cards with my best friend Chris While card collecting has skyrocketed into a multi million dollar industry and most youngsters are focused primarily on the worth of cards this is still one the best past times around as far as Im concerned I was recently at George Kennedy Public School to take pictures at the schools sports card club In ad dition to trading and talking about cards with friends members also learn how to protect cards and determine their worth from regular visits with Jim Annette of V Distributors Not surprisingly club Jim Miller has found he will have to divide the club in two groups in order to accommodate the number of members This is a great idea It shows parents and the community as a whole that teachers are interested in other aspects of students lives not just academic Sports in Perspective Steven I must also pay tribute to the Georgetown Chrysler Raider management along with Georgetown Optimist Club and Regional Police for coming up with the idea for Raider hockey cards The project has taken off youngsters are now able to identify with the players and perhaps even enjoy the game more and ticket sales to home games certainly ap peared to increase during the first three weeks that the cards were distributed Despite the fact that making money seems to be a primary con cern for sports card collectors the hobby teaches children some portant values as well For instance the condition cards are kept in greatly determines their worth Children learn the im portance of taking care of their cor in order to maximize their in vestment Collecting also helps them learn the art of decision making their are so many different makes of cards on the market today that youngsters are forced to narrow their collecting to a few sets those they feel will be most in demand in the coming years I have also noticed many teenagers getting part time jobs to finance their hobby I must always give a thumbs up to a young person working for something they want During my journeys in Hills it is clear the spirit and en of collecting sports cards is still alive This makes me glad Wednesday January 29 1992 ALL POSTAL SERVICES AVAILABLE 9am9pm EXCEPT PRIORITY
