signed her up at the Georgetown Racquet Club From this inauspicious begin she has become one of ida best squash players and is herself worthy of com petmg against the best players in the world Jans 18 a Grade student at Georgetown Distnct High School trains at Pine Valley Racquet Club in Toronto Her coach is Barbara Diggins She is currently ranked number one in Canada for her age group and hopes to make the national team in the If she is successful she will compete at the World Squash Championships in Vancouver this October My chances of make the team are very solid said At first I told the national coach Ian that my goals were to make the team He told me that I should strive to place in the top two on the team explained that she became involved in squash after she hurt her knees and had to give up gymnastics She had trained at the Hills Gymnastics Club McLANIc JANS She took the national squash scene by storm at a very young age placing forth at the Nationals for her age group in Sarnia when she was and capturing the gold the following year Vancouver skills on the squash court have taken her around the world as well Before Christmas she competed at the Dutch Open in Am sterdam the trip was sponsored by S Group of Toronto There she managed to qualify and met Michelle Martin who is ranked number two in world and took a game from her for the top circuit She has also competed in such countries as Scotland England Australia and Norway Before Christmas I competed in England and was eliminated early in competition said I was able to do some shopping and take in some sight seeing In addition lo competing on the world circuit is a member of the Rebels squash team and also teaches ballet once a week to five classes at the Hills Gymnastics Club She enjoys playing tennis and hopes to play soccer this summer explained her plans after finishing high school center on her making the national team She hopes to eventually have a world ranking Her back up plan should she need one is to attend university and earn a degree in sports psychology If she takes this route she wishes to attend the University of Toronto so she can continue to train at her current club Right now Melanie is focusing all her attention on making the national team and making a name for herself in the international squash scene She is determined to make it to the top and is an in spiration to
