30 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, January 14, 2010 Wanted: creative fundraising ideas By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre news Have you just moved to the Acton area, recently retired and are 55 plus? There are always lots of things happening at the Acton Seniors Centre, whether it is volunteering, or just joining some of the various drop-in programs or enjoying the monthly social evenings. Quite a few members visited the Centre during the week between Christmas and New Year's, including the exercise classes and the scrapbooking class. Some people dropped in to renew their membership or become members. Did you forget to renew yours with all the hustle and bustle of Christmas? The 2010 membership dues were due by December 31. As the response to the opening over the holiday week was positive, I think it will be continued another year. The Fundraising commmittee meets once a month and Bev Jones is the chair. He is always looking for fresh ideas and new members. Are you interested in helping with something like this? If so please leave a message at the front desk and Bev will call you back. The next major fundraiser will be the Spring Bazaar on Saturday, May 8 which is the Mother's Day weekend. Our Christmas bazaar raised just over $3,000. The committee asked me to thank everyone who helped in any way, whether by shopping, donating items for sale, or their time. Thinking of fundraising, did you know that if you make a donation to the Acton Seniors Centre (or the Looking to the Future fund), you will receive an official income tax receipt, which can be used for a deduction in your income tax. Donna Rowley tells me there are still openings for dart players on Monday mornings. They have lots of fun, and now have more space as the pool table has found a new home. She is hoping to challenge the Georgetown members to a friendly game in the near future. All the regular drop-in and other programs are up and running: · Mondays-- T'ai Chi, line dancing, badminton or walking in the Dufferin Centre, carpet bowling, scrapbooking (last Monday of month). · Wednesdays-- exercise classes, watercolouring · Thursdays-- canasta and bid euchre and scrapbooking · Fridays-- shuffleboard, lunch, bingo, hiking SENIORS LIFESTYLES Donation to Bennett Village Gallery Paul Armstrong presented a utility cart to The Gallery at Bennett Village.
