Home didn't have working alarms Continued from pg. 1 The cause is believed to be failure of electrical wiring. The family has made other living arrangements while the home is repaired. Olivieri said the fire should serve as a reminder that as of March 2006 it is provincial law that every home is to be equipped with at least one working smoke alarm on every storey including the basement, and outside every sleeping area. "Smoke alarms are designed to provide early warning of fire to permit the safe evacuation of your home. For under $10 you're protecting the lives of your family members and your property," said Olivieri. He added for further protection smoke alarms need to be tested and maintained so they work as designed. "If you have a battery-operated smoke alarm, replace your battery twice a year. Also, all smoke alarms should be tested monthly by pushing the test button, and it is a good idea to vacuum the smoke alarm too," said Olivieri. Anyone with questions regarding smoke alarms or their proper placement is asked to contact Captain Dave Ford of the fire department's Public Education Division at 905-873-2601 ext. 2115. 5 ALL OFFERS END IN 2 DAYS! FireGenieTM Remote Control or Parents offered to help in school cleanup Continued from pg. 1 Marnie Denton, a spokeswoman for Halton District School Board, said the school has insurance, although it is not yet clear who will be responsible for paying for the damage. Board maintenance crews were at the school Tuesday cleaning up. Tadman said the board put out an automated call to parents Tuesday morning to tell them the school was closed. He was disappointed the incident happened, but added that community support has been incredible. "We've gotten several calls from parents, and every single one was an offer to help cleanup. Not one was to complain," he said. Staff from the Town of Halton Hills, the library, volunteer firefighters and other local businesses also offered to assist. "It's been amazing," said Tadman. "When this happens, you really understand the community spirit is still here today."
