GO trains to Acton a step closer Continued from pg. 4 Corporation and Arup Group Inc. The study is expected to be completed by December. The Big Move envisions electrified, express rail to Mount Pleasant with all-day, two-way service to Georgetown over the next 14 years. At least one obstacle to that increase in service to Georgetown is being worked on. Last year, the Province and the federal government announced a combined $30 million to widen the rail bridge over the Credit River to allow for a second track and include provision for a third. The current bridge's one track is used by GO, freight, and VIA/ Amtrak trains. The project is scheduled to be completed by this fall. GO completed the environmental assessment for the Georgetown to Kitchener extension last July. An environmental study report released for public comment identified four potential station locations in Acton, Guelph, Breslau and Kitchener. The study evaluated potential locations in Acton at the olde Hide House and near Dublin Line, with the former determined to be the preferred option. If government funding was made available, the study stated the service could begin running by 2011 with four eastbound trains in the morning peak period and four westbound in the afternoon. It estimated the initial cost at $125 million, with an additional $28.5 million from VIA Rail, to cover necessary rail improvements, station upgrades and layover facilities. Long-term upgrades to those three would cost an additional $396 million, the study stated. The study estimated passenger volumes in the range of range of 2,300 to 5,000 daily trips in the short term (2011) and 9,000 to 16,000 in the long term (2031).
