10 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,February 9, 2010 SPORTS & LEISURE Raiders face tough foes prior to start of playoffs Two more tough tests await the Georgetown Raiders this weekend before they can turn their attention to the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League's playoffs. The third-place Raiders have five games remaining in the regular season, including clashes with the two teams ahead of them in the 15-team loop-- on Friday in Oakville against the Blades and a home date with the front-running Kingston Voyageurs Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m. Prior to that, however, Georgetown will host the sixth-place Trenton Golden Hawks Wednesday at 8 p.m., likely needing to win all remaining games in order to pass Oakville for second spot in the standings. The Blades currently hold a threepoint advantage, also with five games left to play. The 38-9-4 Raiders are on a four-game winning streak after beating host Huntsville 3-2 in overtime Friday and skating past the lastplace Milton IceHawks 7-3 here Saturday. Rookie Evan Rodrigues netted the OT clincher against Huntsville after the Otters scored with 21 seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time. Nick Avgerinos and Steve Perfetto also tallied for the visitors. Jeremy Wick and Scott Wilson had two goals each Saturday to help hand Milton its 41st consecutive loss. Rodrigues, Dorian Peca and Patrick Moran added single markers and Georgetown resident Ryan Kelly did well in the IceHawk goal to prevent the Raiders from reaching double digits, facing 56 shots in total. Also last week, the Raiders had another tough time with the Mississauga Chargers but prevailed by a 6-4 count. Duston Hebebrand (2), Dorian Peca (2), Chris Borges and John Girman were the Georgetown goal scorers. Brandon Star of the Georgetown Rebels raced to a fourthplace finish in the senior boys' 100-metre individual medley event during a high school meet held last week at the Georgetown Indoor Pool. Star was also a member of the Rebel senior boys' 200m medley relay team that nosed out the Nelson Lords for first place by 0.15 seconds in the final.
