4 Sports & Leisure, Thursday, February 18, 2010 Mayor to host Bowl for Kids Sake at Georgetown Bowl next month Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette hosts the annual Bowl for Kids Sake bowling tournament on March 7, at Georgetown Bowl in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton and their mentoring programs for local children. The mayor issues the following challenge, "As Mayor I will be bringing members of council to show that we are "really on the ball" and our team may be the one to beat. Why not get your friends and coworkers together, teams can be up to six people or better yet enter a number of teams. We welcome the competition. The real winners will the little brothers and little sisters of Halton Hills." Bonnette hopes to attract 16 teams that will come together to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton (BBBSH) mentoring programs in Halton Hills. Many people know that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton matches volunteers with local children in one-to-one mentoring relationships, a bond that makes a lifelong impact on the life of a child. However, BBBSH offers other mentoring programs in the community. For instance last year over 50 elementary school children benefited from attending the Homework Club after-school mentoring program for kids. The Homework Club is currently operating in four area schools in Halton Hills, two in Georgetown and two in Acton. Another Big Brothers Big Sisters initiative is the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, operating in a number of elementary schools in Halton Hills. The Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program is designed to provide girls aged 12-14 with information to help them make informed choices about healthy active living and support them in dealing with emotional, social, and cultural issues they may face. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton is partially funded by the United Way of Halton Hills, but receives no ongoing government funding so it is campaigns like Bowl for Kids' Sake that ensures the agency can continue to reach out to those children most in need of a mentor.
