8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,February 23, 2010 SPORTS & LEISURE Georgetown District High School will have a dozen representatives competing at next week's provincial wrestling championships after an impressive team performance at last Friday's Golden Horseshoe meet in Hamilton. The Rebels captured the girls' overall points title and the boys finished a close runner-up to Milton's E.C. Drury in the team standings, surpassing perennial Steeltown grappling powerhouse Bishop Ryan for the first time in recent memory. Georgetown girls who won their respective weight classes at GHAC were Nikki Fraser, Meghan Wylde, Kendra Blackbourn, Ashley Penrice and Kerri Malcolm, while Amy Pond was second. Hockey Christ the King's Jaguars will try to wrap up their two-game quarterfinal playoff series with Robert Bateman of Burlington on home ice today (Tuesday) with a tie or a win. Raiders do battle with Knights By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The eight teams in the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League playoffs had little time to prepare as the Georgetown Raiders took on the visiting Villanova Knights last night (Monday) to begin their bestof-7 opening-round matchup, literally just a few hours after the regular season ended. Remaining series dates had yet to be finalized at The Independent & Free Press' deadline Monday, but because the next round is slated to begin March 6, it's likely the Raiders will also play at home on Wednesday and Saturday of this week. Third-place Georgetown finished the regular season on a three-game win streak and will face a Villanova squad that placed sixth in the 15-team OJHL with a 33-19-4 record, although the Knights lost all four games to the Raiders during the regular schedule. The 41-10-5 Raiders scored three unanswered goals in the third period Friday at Rama to pull off a 4-2 victory over the fifth-place Couchiching Terriers. Evan Rodrigues (2), Justin Basso and Scott Wilson supplied the offence and Michael Nishi was the winning netminder, making 25 stops. Kyle Essery, Dorian Peca and Wilson potted two goals apiece Saturday in Georgetown as the hosts sent the Bramalea Blues home for the year with an 8-4 trouncing. Defenders Nick Avgerinos and Kevin Van Dyk, with his first as a Raider, rounded out the scoring. Tony Capobianco picked up the win as the Raiders outshot Bramalea 53-22. Swimming After claiming their 11thconsecutive Halton team championship earlier this month, the Georgetown Rebels were dominant again at the GHAC qualifier in Hamilton last week and will send 46 swimmers to the OFSAA finals at the Etobicoke Olympium next week. Ten of the dozen GDHS relay teams qualified for the provincials and a junior girls' foursome that was favoured to take gold at OFSAA didn't advance due to a false start disqualification. Among those gunning for Ontario gold in Etobicoke for the Rebels includes Cam Elgie, Basketball Oakville's Loyola won the Ontario Catholic hoops title earlier this month and Georgetown's senior boys were given the assignment to try to knock off the high-flying Hawks in the Halton quarterfinals. Loyola rolled to a 70-32 victory and will face Nelson tonight (Tuesday) for the HSSAA AAAA title at Sheridan College. GEORGETOWN JUNIOR "A" GEORGETOWN JR.
