Council thanked for trade efforts By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Local business owner John Hayward was at a recent council meeting to thank Mayor Rick Bonnette and Town council for their leadership on fighting back against the "Buy American" trade policy. Hayward, of Hayward Gordon Ltd, who first brought the policy to council's attention, also thanked the Town's CAO Dennis Perlin and Economic Development officer Doug Penrice. "The fair trade policy adopted by the Town of Halton Hills and subsequent successful effort in raising this issue to a national level at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities was one of the single most significant factors contributing to the recently announced trade agreement between Canada and the United States," said Hayward. He said the Halton Hills initiative "directly influenced the political agenda or our federal government." "There is no doubt in my mind that an agreement would not exist today without the actions taken by the mayor and this council," said Hayward. "The trade agreement that was ratified is quite possibly the most significant one between Canada and the U.S. in 20 years. You can be proud of your contribution to this achievement and also the fact that a lot more people on both sides of the border have heard of Halton Hills compared to 10 months ago."
