Region puts public safety first I'm always proud to be part of Halton Region, and the latest crime statistics from the Halton Regional Police Service once again demonstrate the commitment we have to public safety. Named in 2009, for the second consecutive year, as the Safest Place to Live in the Greater Toronto Area and the Safest Regional Municipality in Canada by Maclean's magazine, Halton Region's crime rate has dropped even further. The new statistics from Halton Regional Police Service indicate that the crime rate in Halton has decreased significantly, by 10.5 per cent, after our recognition by Maclean's. This includes the number of violent crime offences decreasing by 6.7 per cent; property crime offences going down by 8.4 per cent; and all other offences went down by 14.6 per cent. All percentage drops take into account the population increase throughout the region. I know our community safety continues to improve as a result of the efforts of our residents, business owners and municipalities, working hand in hand with the Halton Regional Police Service, to ensure we have a safe place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Just a few months ago, we celebrated Crime Stoppers Month in Congratulations! Student of the Month 7 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 Gary Carr Halton Region. As a non-profit, non-police organization that encourages members of the public to anonymously report information about criminal activity in exchange for cash, Crime Stoppers has helped us accomplish this decrease in crime through cooperation with residents and of course, our police services. Your efforts show an elevated level of partnership and commitment to Halton Region. I want to thank everyone who has done their part to prevent crime in our region. It is only by working together that we can continue to build a stronger and safer community. As a member of the Halton Regional Police Service Board, congratulations to the Halton Region Police Service and to the Halton community as a whole! --Gary Carr is the chair of Halton Region Jack Weisz Jack has shown a great attitude and genuine love for music in his lessons at the Academy of Music.
