10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, March 25, 2010 INDIAN RIVER DIRECT CITRUS TRUCKLOAD SALE Town employees get `fresh' By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer It looked a little like a Farmers' Market in the cafeteria at the Civic Centre recently with the introduction of the Halton Fresh Food Box program to Town of Halton Hills employees. The program, which promotes affordable and healthy eating and supports local farmers by sourcing locally grown and seasonal foods as much as possible, was introduced to employees by the Town's Staff Sustainability Team. Approximately 30 Town employees have signed up to take part, receiving a box full of fresh produce on a monthly basis. More staff can take part at any time. "Each box typically includes between 12 and 15 different kinds of fresh produce, typically sourced from within a 100 km radius of Halton Region," said Damian Szybalski, the Town's Sustainability Co-ordinator Planning, Development and Sustainability. The produce is selected based on availability, the season, quality, freshness and price, he said. "In out-of-season months typically approximately 50 per cent of the food box's content is sourced locally, whereas during the Ontario growing season the aim is to have 100 per cent of the produce sourced locally," said Szybalski. Depending on the size of the food box, participating Town staff pay either $13 or $17 per month to participate. Szybalski said on the first delivery date Town staff picked up more than 600 lbs of produce, "thereby taking a big bite out of local food." He said Town staff are making a difference by eating fresh and nutritious produce, enjoying healthy living, supporting local agriculture and farmers, reducing air pollution by buying locally grown food rather then produce picked unripe then transported thousands of kilometres, creating a sense of community, building an awareness of sustainability and helping to implement the Town's Green Plan. "The program is off to a great start with much positive feedback received from the approximately 30 participating Town staff. For example, one employee wrote, `My husband used one of the recipes in the newsletter the after we received our food basket. The vegetable bake was delicious. We found the quality of the produce in the food basket to be excellent,'" said Szybalski. The Halton Fresh Food Box program is run by more than 150 volunteers and is partly funded by Halton Region and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
