The Golden Horseshoechampion Jaguars advanced to the quarterfinals of last week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA/AAAA tournament in St. Catharines in only season four of the varsity boys' program at CtK before losing to eventual bronze-medalist St. Mary of Pickering 4-2. Coach Scott Van de Valk's squad went 2-2-0 in the preliminary round, needing a 3-2 victory over Toronto's St. Basil The Great on a last-minute empty-netter by Brendan Krivec to get through to the quarterfinals, thanks in large part to the netminding of Marcus Rees. Suspensions and injuries took their toll, however, and the Jaguars fell behind 3-0 early on to fourth-seeded St. Mary. Yet the 10th-ranked Jags pieced together goals by Matt Quinn and one of the 20-team tourney's top scorers, Troy Breen, to cut the lead to 3-2 before St. Mary netted the insurance marker with three minutes remaining. Denis Morris of St. Catharines captured the gold medal with a 4-1 triumph, handing Mississauga's St. Marcellinus its first loss of the season. 'Canes capture bronze Halton Hurricane Jason Dickinson of Georgetown keeps a step ahead of Ottawa Jr. Senator David Bennett during the Ontario Hockey Federation bantam AAA provincial championships in Ottawa last week. The Hurricanes won this contest 3-2 and advanced to the semifinals, receiving spectacular goaltending from Georgetown's Joseph Bonsignore, before being edged 2-1 by the Don Mills Flyers, who went on to beat Sudbury 3-0 in Saturday's gold medal game. The Hurricanes rebounded to beat the Thunder Bay Kings 3-1 in the bronze medal final Saturday, with Dickinson and fellow Georgetown resident Jacob Harris scoring goals. Local residents Liam Clare, Jake Perehiniak and Will McDonald are defenders with the Hurricanes and Clare led the team's rearguards in points with a goal and four assists in eight games.
