8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, April 22, 2010 CtK to host Student Awards of Excellence Monday night The Halton Catholic Distric School Board is hosting its 2010 Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony on Monday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown. At its 22nd annual anniversary celebration, the school board will honour both the Sharing The Spirit Student Award of Excellence recipients and the Spirit of Inclusion Award winners. Each year one student representative is selected from each Halton Catholic elementary and secondary school to receive the Sharing The Spirit Student Award of Excellence. A gold medallion and a certificate will be presented to each of the eight high school and 40 elementary students. Students selected to receive a Sharing The Spirit Award were nominated by their principal. Each had to have demonstrated outstanding qualities in the following areas: Catholic leadership; family commitment; involvement in school affairs; involvement in community activities; and dedication to a difficult situation or task. Local students selected are: Rose Schmidt, Christ the King; Lucy Ray, Holy Cross; Torie McDermot, St. Brigid; Karlina Fiaes, St. Catherine of Alexandria; Amanda Bruder, St. Francis of Assisi and Joshua Beaune, St. Joseph. Firefighters raise $14,384 for Haiti relief Following a very successful `Boot Drive' fundraising campaign, members from Halton Hills Fire Department presented a cheque for $14,384.46 to the Canadian Red Cross Haitian Earthquake Relief Fund. Photo by Ted Brown Mayor meals Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette joined with Meals on Wheels volunteer Peggy Gormley (left) as they loaded meals into the car at the Links2Care office on Armstrong Avenue. Bonnette was taking part in Mayors for Meals, a North American awareness campaign for the Meals on Wheels program. Bonnette later served a meal to client Ed Higginson (right). Meals on Wheels provides a hot lunch for seniors or disabled adults who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. In addition to providing adequate nutrition, allowing the client to live independently in their home, the program also provides a check on the clients' well-being. Meals are delivered to the door by volunteers who also provide a friendly face and a smile to brighten the day. Various meals options are available.
