Earth Day celebrations expanded Continued from pg. 1 New this year, there will be Earth Day activities at Georgetown Market Place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (April 24). In light of the biodiversity theme, in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, the mall will host a fun-filled and informative family friendly Earth Day event. Featured will be a live bird exhibit and an animal balloon-sculpting clown who will entertain children. The event will also feature an Environmental Expo where residents can meet local groups that are committed to the environment. There will also be three practical workshops. The first workshop will feature the Halton Solar Residential Project where residents have an opportunity to hear from a local resident who installed solar panels at home. The second workshop will be hosted by Whole Circle Farm in Acton. During the workshop a spokesperson from Whole Circle Farm will share their thoughts on ecological farming. The third workshop will be designed for youth in an attempt to inspire "green thinkers." Throughout the day, Earth Week will be celebrated with the musical talents featuring a local artist and/or students of the Royal Academy of Arts & Education. Also new this year, will be a Green Building Tour at Devereaux House. Located on Trafalgar Rd., just north of Maple Ave., the Devereaux House is a 19th century home that was restored while preserving its heritage character and incorporating a variety of green technologies. On Saturday, the Friends of Devereaux House will offer free tours of the house showcasing its many green building features as well as the heritage restoration of the house itself. Devereaux House will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the guided green building tours starting on the hour at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. The tours will provide an opportunity to not only see the heritage value of the building but also to see, touch and learn about practical green features that can be included in a home in order to increase its efficiency and avoid costs. The features include on-demand water heating, energy efficient lighting, geo-thermal heating, low-flow toilets, biofilter septic system and zone indoor heating. Information will also be available on the many incentives available to homeowners and businesses towards their own efficiency improvements. This makeover has 22 minutes Halton Hills will be celebrating Earth Day's 40th birthday today (Thursday) with thousands of students and employees out in full force picking up litter. This year the Town is holding its 22 Minute Makeover on Earth Day. It's expected that all Halton Hills schools will take part. Last year, businesses such as Sun Opta and Purity Life sent employees out on a beautiful spring day to collect truck loads of litter in Norval and Acton. It is hoped more businesses will participate this year. The 22 Minute Makeover takes little more time than the average coffee break. Particpants are often amazed at the amount of litter there is and how good they feel about getting it off the ground and out of sight. Employees from the Town of Halton Hills will be participating with everyone doing their bit to clean up the public spaces around town. Any businesses wishing to participate are asked to register their clean-up locations and arrange for free gloves and bags by calling the Town of Halton Hills at 905-8732601 ext. 2609. 15 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, April 22, 2010 Carmella Dinuszio of the Town of Halton Hills' works department (left), was joined by Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal as they displayed some of the trees available for sale this Saturday at the Robert C.
