Local teams win Bridge Club tourney By TOM GIBBS Georgetown Bridge Club As the highlight of our busy season the Georgetown Bridge Club put on an all-day duplicate tournament in aid of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. This foundation focuses on helping families in Africa that are affected by the HIV-AIDS epidemic. Many children are orphaned, homeless, and being raised by grandparents and institutions. The event was held on Saturday, April 17, and featured a potluck luncheon. Many generous prizes were donated by local businesses, including Royal Bank, HeyRay Realty, Goodyear Tire, Red Lemon Hair Salon, Creditview Furniture, Edward Jones Investing, Main Street Inn, Foodstuffs, Georgetown Garden Centre, Kelsey's and Georgetown Esso. We had players from Milton, Brampton, Mississauga, Acton, and Oakville join us for the competition, but it was two Georgetown couples who came out on top-- Ed and Midge McKelvie tied with Janice Giles and Maureen Sykes for first place. Our bridge club has grown significantly over the last few years due mainly to many new players learning the game through our evening beginner game and courses. These are held every Wednesday evening and begin each October. Club members generously donate their time and talents to put on these courses to introduce people to this fascinating game. We also conduct more advanced games for seasoned bridge players, both afternoons and evenings. These games are excellent opportunities to sharpen your skills and come up to speed on the newer techniques and bidding conventions.
