Local firefighter to train peers in Honduras A Halton Hills firefighter will be heading to Honduras with Firefighters Without Borders Saturday to help train firefighters in that country. Georgetown resident Donavon Gaudette will join five Mississauga firefighters travelling to Honduras for the seven-day mission to strengthen the ability of the community to deal with a variety of emergency situations. They will provide hands-on training, teaching plans and support with gear and equipment. Some of the topics included will be first aid/CPR, hazardous materials, auto extrication, technical rescue, small engine/pump maintenance, firefighting, and disaster preparedness. The firefighters will be focusing specifically on safety education for school children. Honduras, in Central America, faces many challenges from forest fires, hurricanes, floods, drought and social risk in addition to struggling to deal with more routine responses such as fires, rescues, medical emergencies etc. Firefighters Without Borders has committed to a three-year program that will see a team of professional firefighters travel to Honduras twice a year to train both the firefighters and community people in various life saving disciplines, and emergency preparedness principles. In addition to teaching people valuable skills, they will be teaching them to be instructors so that they may go back to the community and provide training to others. This initiative will be implemented at the national, municipal and community level, and over the course of the program will reach thousands of people both directly and indirectly. All firefighters who work with Firefighters Without Borders pay their own expenses and donate their own personal time while participating in the program, so every dime goes directly where it's needed. Firefighters Without Borders hopes to raise $250,000 during the course of its stay in Honduras.
