Georgetown Hospital Welcomes Midwives As of April 1, 2010 families who choose to deliver their babies by a midwife will be able to do so at Georgetown Hospital. Six midwives have been granted privileges to Georgetown Hospital and will be working very closely with the healthcare team in the Obstetrical Department. A midwife is a primary caregiver, who provides all the care necessary for a healthy woman and her baby throughout her pregnancy, birth and for six weeks afterwards. Midwives can also order laboratory and ultrasound testing and give some medications during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum (after birth) period. If the care of either mom or baby becomes complicated, they are able to refer women and babies to family doctors or specialist doctors like Obstetricians and Paediatricians at Georgetown Hospital. For more information about Midwifery contact the Midwifery Care of Peel & Halton Hills, Georgetown Office located at 1A Princess Anne Drive, Unit 105, 905-702-1911 or log on to The Association of Ontario Midwives website at www.aom.on.ca.
