Candlelight Tributes set for May 6 BBQ'S ARE HERE Next Thursday (May 6), when students pass by the cenotaph in Georgetown to place a candle on its base, they will not only be marking the eighth year of the Candlelight Tributes, but will also commemorate the 65th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. During the day, 1,400 students from 19 schools, accompanied by veterans, will place candles during ceremonies in Georgetown's Remembrance Park at 10 a.m. and in Glen Williams at 1 p.m. at the cenotaph. The Candlelight Tribute in the Glen will feature all 175 Glen Williams School students. To initiate the ceremonies there will be a re-dedication service of the cenotaph since there has been an addition of a Celtic cross to the structure. An invitation is extended to the residents of Glen Williams to attend the service and take part in the tributes by placing a candle on the cenotaph. "I like to think of the Candlelight Tributes as a symbolic passing of the torch of remembrance," said Georgetown Candlelight Tributes Chair Barry Timleck. "The candles signify the peace and freedom we enjoy as Canadians. "Candlelight tributes are commemorative ceremonies, which inspire young Canadians to learn more about Canada's military history, as well as our community's local history, heritage, heroes and veterans," he added. Not only can school children take part-- all residents will be able to participate that evening. At 7 p.m., a Silent Walk will leave Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 (on Mill St.) and make its way to Remembrance Park, in which all members of the community will be able to honour veterans by placing candles at the cenotaph. Following the Silent Walk there will be a reception at the Legion for people to socialize with the veterans. The Candlelight Tributes began in May 2003, after Martin Boomsma led the initial Keeping The Memory Alive tour to Holland the previous year. While there, the group witnessed a Silent Walk during the Remembrance Day celebrations in the city of Zuphen. About 1,000 townspeople laid flowers at a cenotaph in recognition of their freedom and in honour of their liberators, the Canadian war dead. Later, the tour group learned that Dutch children traditionally placed candles on the graves in the Commonwealth war cemeteries, every year on Christmas Eve. A few members of the tour group were moved by the tributes in Holland, and began planning to hold a similar celebration in Halton Hills. This year the Candlelight Tributes committee has incorporated a celebration of the 65th anniversary of VE-Day. Candles, priced at $5, are available by contacting Timleck, at 905-877-6198 or by email at btimleck1@sympatico.ca. 5 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, April 29, 2010 HALTON'S ONLY BBQ STORE WITH ON STAFF GAS FITTERS! · 101,200 BTU-LP or NG · High Power SEAR STATION · Solid stainless cooking grills · Lighted cooking area & control SUMMIT · 80,000 BTU of cooking power · Heavy duty cooking grills · Rotisserie included with rear burner · Side burner for side dishes THIS SATURDAY ONLY!!
