During the campaign, that ran from April 14-24 across Halton, police gave out 743 tickets for seatbelt violations, 206 seatbelt warnings, 108 child seat warnings and 17 tickets for child seat violations. In north Halton (Halton Hills and Milton) 101 seatbelt warnings, 370 seatbelt tickets for violations, 75 child seat warnings and 14 tickets for child seat violations were handed out. In Oakville 79 seatbelt warnings were issued, 196 tickets for seatbelt violations, 21 child seat warnings and two tickets for child seat violations. In Burlington there were 26 seatbelt warnings, 177 seatbelt tickets, 12 child seat warnings and one ticket for a child seats violation issued. To date this year. Halton Police can attribute one death to the lack of seatbelt use. In 2009, the lack of a seatbelt was a contributing factor in five fatalities on Halton roads. "Wearing a seatbelt in Ontario has been mandatory since 1976," said Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell. "Given their effectiveness in helping prevent injury and death, it is inconceivable that some people are still not wearing them." To drive the point home police remind area drivers that in March a young Milton girl survived a serious crash on Trafalgar Rd. in Milton in which an Acton man was charged because she was buckled into a properly installed child car seat. Team efforts were put in by students like (at right) Shauna Nyardy, Ali Salvian, Cassidy Ferguson and Darian Zuraw, as they competed in the `canoeing' competition. Students collected pledges to raise money to cover some of the curriculum costs at the school.
