2 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,May 4, 2010 Halton Physician Appreciation Week +?WÏÏRMÏÏ A salute to our physicians for their compassion and dedication to patient care May 3 to 7, 2010 is the 8th Annual Halton Physician Appreciation Week. During this week, Halton Region Gary Carr - Halton Regional Chair and local hospitals recognize physicians for their tremendous contribution to our community. The week was originally established in 2003 by the Halton Physician Recruitment program. The program addresses physician shortages and the needs of the future, allowing us to do our part in ensuring the delivery of effective health services to Halton residents. By working together with Local Municipalities, physicians, local hospitals, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and others, our Physician Recruitment initiative has achieved impressive results: almost 100 new family doctors practising in Halton. Another milestone this past year was a $10-million investment by Halton Region and the City of Burlington towards the McMaster University DeGroote Centre of Advanced Management Studies and the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre in Burlington. The Health Centre will serve as a family medical clinic for the general public and provide a practical clinical experience for McMaster family medicine residents to the benefit of all Halton residents. As we saw, particularly during the recent H1N1 pandemic, physicians in Halton are committed to excellence and work hard to continuously improve the delivery of high-quality, efficient and satisfying care to patients. This commitment goes beyond the time spent in a practice or hospital setting. Halton doctors support each other by sharing their knowledge. They mentor and serve as role models for medical students and medical residents. Halton doctors are also incredibly supportive of the Physician Recruitment program and are a big part of its success. Additionally, like other Halton residents, doctors volunteer in the community, helping to make Halton a wonderful place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Halton physicians play a vital role in keeping our community healthy and thriving. We are truly fortunate to have such excellent medical care available. During Halton Physician Appreciation Week, we say a collective thank-you to all of Halton's dedicated physicians.
