18 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,May 18, 2010 SHOPLOCAL SHOP SMART... SHOP HALTON HILLS FAMILY IN BUSINESS Emerald Isle The times, they are a-changin' for Emerald Isle Home Furnishings. The Sinclair Plaza, which houses a variety of businesses including Emerald Isle, was recently torn down and replaced with a bigger, more modern building. The businesses in the plaza have all relocated with the exception of Emerald Isle, which has moved into the 24,000-square-foot new building. The new structure, which will house Emerald Isle, has been built slightly further back in the lot to make room for more parking out front. "We're calling it our 25-foot move," says Emerald Isle owner Bert Wilson with a laugh. Emerald Isle, which has been in business for 23 years, is a full home furnishings, mattress and hot tub store. The business is closed until construction is complete and will re-open in early June. The staff will continue offering deliveries and in-home consultations, but the showroom will be closed. According to Wilson, the inconvenience will be worth it. The new location will be much more open than their current one and staff members are already busy getting the new showroom ready for the public. SHOPLOCAL SHOP SMART... SHOP HALTON HILLS Boreland's Mixed Martial Arts & Fitness After a quick weekend move to its new location in the Knolcrest Centre (348 Guelph Street, Georgetown), Boreland's Mixed Martial Arts is already back up and open for business. Founded by Sensei Chris and Pam Boreland in 1991, Boreland's Mixed Martial Arts quickly grew from being solely a karate school to also offering boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes. The dojo provides classes for kids, teens and adults of all ages and levels of experience. The school's new location is beautiful, says Sensei Chris, and offers much more room for the mixed martial arts classes, which are becoming more and more in demand due to the increasing popularity of the UFC. "There is something here for every member of the family," says Sensei Chris, who has been studying martial arts for 34 years and who has a sixth-degree black belt in karate. Family fitness is more than just a goal for Sensei Chris. His wife teaches kickboxing at the dojo while his son leads a boxing class and his daughter teaches karate. "You study the martial arts, which means you get a body of knowledge along with physical training," Sensei Chris says. "The sense of accomplishment is priceless. It's very powerful to watch someone develop to that point of accomplishment." Mark is the operations manager of Bennett's Waste Disposal Inc., a business he and his dad, Colin, started in 1991. The business offers a range of services, including rural waste pickup for Halton Hills residents who don't get town pickup, and bin services for residential and commercial purposes. Whether the customer needs a temporarily for a home renovation or longterm for their business, Bennett Waste Disposal can help. Mark's business is truly a family affair: in addition to his father, he also works with his mother, sister and wife. "Working with my family is fantastic. I wouldn't want it any other way," Mark says. "People think we get on each other's nerves, but we really don't. We work together all day and we still get together on weekends for barbecues and go on vacation together." Mark and his family enjoy getting to know their customers and proving friendly, personalized service. "Of our 350 or so clients, I think my mom knows everybody's name and life story," Mark laughs. "We all like talking to our customers even though it might take longer to do our job. Our motto is 'Your garbage is our bread and butter.'" David & Annette Byrne If you play soccer in town, then you probably know David and Annette Byrne, the owners and operators of Soccer Plus. After four years of business David and Annette realized the need to expand their store. "This is a wonderfully supportive town and we are pleased that our expanded store will allow us to keep up with growing needs of this community" Annette explains. Their new 1000 sq' location "just around the corner" on Delrex still offers everything you could possibly need for soccer including name brand indoor and outdoor shoes, shin pads, gloves, sporting apparel and training equipment. The expanded space allows them to take on the ever-increasing demand for team orders and corporate wear. "We offer custom embroidering, screen printing as well as hot pressing for anything from soccer uniforms to hockey jerseys, corporate pieces to spirit wear," Annette says. Soccer has always been a passion for David, who has played and coached his entire life. He is extremely active in local youth soccer and cares about the development of the town's soccer programs. "Every kid that walks into the store recognizes David and says hi," Annette says. "He knows all the kids by name and the kids all know him." Both David and Annette are looking forward to the start of another busy season and seeing familiar faces at their store. Carpet Palace For more than 15 years, the Carpet Palace has been a fixture at the corner of Guelph Street and Adamson Street in Norval. Owned and operated by brothers-in-law George Kanichis and Steve Klintsaris, the store is proud to offer a wide variety of flooring options from carpet and area rugs to laminate and hardwood. Over the last several months, the Carpet Palace has undergone major changes. The business moved to a temporary location at the Knolcrest Centre while the Norval building was torn down and replaced with a larger, more modern structure. The workers are currently putting the finishing touches on the new 6,700-square-foot building and Steve and George hope to move in and be open for business at the beginning of the summer. Customers can look forward to a grand re-opening celebration with lots of deals and specials. The staff at the Carpet Palace prides themselves on their excellent customer service. They offer personal, one-on-one service and will go out of their way to help their clients find the flooring product that best meets their needs and décor. "Carpeting and flooring is a permanent decision. It's not like paint where you can just paint over it if you don't like it. You have to be happy with it," George says. 360 GUELPH ST., GEORGETOWN OLD BUILDING La-Z-Boy Ultimate Leather SALE ON NOW!!
