The aim of the studio, located at 138 Mill St., is to encourage children to create something from their imagination, cultivate their creativity by teaching them the skills and techniques they need for success and then to celebrate their artistic achievements, said KASE owner/artist Janette Gray. The studio offers an art-based Summer Camp Program beginning the week of July 5. KASE, formerly Which Craft Arts Studio, also offers a Fine Arts program from September to June, and starting again this September, will offer the Start with Art for Preschoolers. Each week has a different theme in the art-based Summer Camp Program and covers different artistic mediums. A variety of techniques and materials are used to create artistic projects such as Papier Mache, clay sculptures, photography, canvas imagery, mask, and abstract and modern art. "I made my mask using paints and my mind. What I like about my mask is that it was created by left, Ellen Crawley and Louise Crawley and from my own work and nobody else's," back left, Emma Major and Hadley Biehn. said Hadley, who has attended camp the past few summers. Photo by Jon Borgstrom The camps are geared towards serious young artists, with a focus on learning techniques and honing skills in each week's subject. No previous art training is required. The Fine Arts program covers many mediums-- drawing, printmaking, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, carving, sculpting and mixed media. Local schools refer children with fine motor skill problems or attention deficit difficulties to KASE and when they are in the studio, their interest in art, is an equalizer with the other students, said Gray. In the Start with Art program a board-certified teacher will help the students with their ABC's and 123's, all through the happy medium of art. The program accepts five students and is a half-day course. The children will have local outings to the library and other downtown venues. A parent of a child who attended the program said it was, "the best decision we made for our daughter, she was mature and academically prepared for kindergarten. What a great start to her education." The program runs five days a week. To register for the camps or other KASE programs visit www. kase.ca or call 905-877-8444.
