Stop the summer brain drain As the temperature starts to climb, students grow restless and look forward to the summer break. Many parents are wary of the potential for learning loss over the summer months. What can parents do? Parenting expert and author Kathy Buckworth recommends parents try to stem this loss with some easy and fun summer learning activities. "Kids lose their school routine over the summer but this does not mean that learning should stop. There are many creative ways to help kids maintain skills - and still enjoy the Canadian summer," she explains. LeapFrog has a number of products to help teach children new skills and keep them engaged in learning by making the process fun with games and technology. Parents can also see the progress of their child's learning by using the free Learning Path service. Books everywhere Buckworth suggests keeping lots of books around and making regular trips to the library. Libraries are excellent places to promote family reading and librarians can suggest age-appropriate books that help keep children engaged. Most libraries also schedule summer events for kids. For younger kids, there are products that can help them feel included as older siblings dive into a book. Leap- 3 Summer Registration Parenting Tuesday, June 22, 2010 Frog's Tag Junior allows kids to develop a love of reading from a young age. The chunky character reads stories out loud to children ages 2-4. There is also the classic Tag for kids ages 4-8. In the Community Learning can take place anywhere, so long as parents and kids alike are willing to exercise their imagination. Arrange a visit to the zoo, museums, aquariums, concerts or parks and encourage them to keep a journal or draw pictures of where they have been to share with friends and family. --www.newscanada.com Summer Theatre Camps!
